Stick together, lock your targets, and focus fire.

1. Stick together! As you spread out across the battlefield you make yourself easy picking for the enemy especially if they are sticking together. I have seen so many matches lost because people are running all over the place.

Exceptions: It is ok for one or two light mechs to scout out the enemy, once found by locking targets you announce to your teammates where the enemy is. It also helps to let them know in the chat window or over voice communication but make sure you lock a target so your teammates with LRMs can soften up the enemy as they approach.

In Conquest matches it is acceptable and preferred that one to three of the very fast Mechs go capture resources. These Mechs should also stick together. There is strength in numbers when you encounter resistance and you capture the resource much faster for every mech on location.

In either case, the rest of the team needs to stick together to engage the rest of the enemy forces as a unit.

2. Always lock your targets! This is not just for LRM support. When you look at the enemy armor diagram on your HUD you can see what parts of the enemy Mech have taken the most damage. By pinpointing your fire on these parts you may drop the mech much faster.

For instance If you see one side torso is more damaged than the other, pinpoint that torso. If the mech happens have an XL engine (Inner Sphere only) it is an easier kill. For standard engines and Clan Mechs you not only take out every weapon in that torso but the adjacent arm. This severely limits how much damage that Mech can do to you and your teammates. If the center torso is almost cored pinpoint that for an easy kill. If one leg is gone target the other, A Mech with no legs is a dead Mech.

For those looking to score more C-Bills and Experience Points, your chance of getting Critical hits is much easier in these areas as well. This means better scores and more cash for you.

This also lets the rest of your team know where the enemy is. Not to mention your allies with LRMs will love you for it. Always ALWAYS lock your targets and incase you missed it ALWAYS LOCK YOUR TARGETS!!!

3. Focus Fire! When several or all of your teammates target the same mech, you kill that Mech that much faster. You can quickly and easily steamroll through the enemy forces by following this rule.

When someone steps up and takes lead of your team they will often call out Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo... either in the chat window or on voice communication. Look for the enemy Mech with A, B, C, D, E... and target that Mech. Watch it almost instantly disappear into a pile of slag.

In the event that someone is not calling targets (and you are not up to taking the lead yourself) look at where your teammates are firing and target that Mech.

Thats it, just three simple rules and you greatly increase your chances of surviving and winning every match.

Stick together, lock your targets, and focus fire.

Yes, yes and yes.

Funny thing teamwork, it works best when everyone on the team is doing things consistently.

Also honorable mention to using cover and ECM - more difficult to be shot at if you are not in line-of-sight.

ye, but sometimes people spread over the whole map, and dont react to any command. 11 rambos are problem. I must stoped once, and just look what the people are doing, it was funny switch to map, and see 12 totaly separated arrows. i must laugh...... game ends 12-2 i made 2 kills , at the end. But seems the other 11 teammates were happy with everything. huh.

1. is highly debatable. Sticking together with a good team = profit. Sticking with a bad team will just get you wrecked. Its better to stick with your lance mates or find mech pilots that are flanking and trying to do some type of tactical movement. Sticking with teammates that are set on staying in one place and playing the poke game is not good.

Its truly is match dependent and you'll know within 2 minutes if you have good teammates.

If I were to add a fourth simple rule it would be communication. Most people in most Pugs will respond to voice coms, step up and give some direction. You might have a couple of people that ignore you but if most listen, and you are following the above three rules, then you are that much better off. Do not be afraid to be a leader if nobody else is leading.

@ stealthraccoon
There are many tactics and strategies I could go into but most have been covered on this site and others. Do they help? Most certainly they do but they are not as important or as easy to learn as the above three but when used in conjunction with them it can be a beautiful thing.

@ mogs01gt
Playing the "poke game" does have it's advantages if your teammates are patient enough to play along. I does not work in every situation though. If you have mostly short range brawlers then you will most likely be LRMed and or sniped to death. Far too many leaders that like to use the tactic fail to take into account what their teammates and enemy Mechs are.

Most of the time when it fails it is because your teammates get antsy and slip off one by one and when the enemy fully engages they are at full strength and your team is underpowered.

When playing the poke game, if you are losing because either the brawlers are getting pined down or to impatient to wait it out, then the leader must be able to switch tactics and drive the rest of the team to support those units that are in trouble.

Last week I was in a match where a teammate decided to take the lead and picked a spot that "he" considered to be the most defensible spot on the map. However that spot was half way across the map and the heavy and slow mechs could not get there fast enough. While on the way, the enemy engaged them and they were forced to either fight where they were or expose their flanks to get where "he" wanted them to be. His continued orders to get to "his spot" only forced the team to spread out and we were easily rolled over. His inability to change tactics and support the slower units caused a team loss.

The fineness of good leadership is easily a whole separate topic but if you can at least keep most of your team together and focusing fire on the same targets, you again greatly increase your chances of a win.

Another advantage to sticking together is that if your teammates suck, by sticking together they provide a shield for you. While they are taking the brunt of the enemy's shots, you can tactically strike at the enemy. By dropping the stronger and or more badly damaged enemy mechs while your teammates are acting as a shield for you, you grately increase your teams chances of a win and stuffing your own coffers. Rule number two will greatly help in this situation.
