Hi guys,

Hoping for a bit of help. TPG have a simply rotten route to Singapore and after a really terrible "so what" response from their tech support on this issue I have decided after a good decade or more of being a loyal customer to go elsewhere.

I am located in Brisbane and am looking at ISPs that offer somewhere around the 150ms experience to the Oceanic server. If the ISP also does decent routing elsewhere in the world that is obviously a plus. Price is somewhat of an issue but latency is key at the moment.

My traceroute is here somewhere to the oceanic server but from my premises I have tested TPG at about 300ms and Telstra 4G at about 150-180ms.

I've heard iinet is being bought by TPG so I am probably looking at other options. I considered Internode, but as they are owned by iinet I do wonder if they will become destroyed by the TPG monster.

TL;DR

Please post your experience of decent priced good latency ISPs in Australia and Brisbane in particular.

Thanks heaps.

I am getting 125ms from home in the Adelaide hills through Dodo (use telstra network) and about 95 through iinet from work in Adelaide.

As you say iinet could be an issue.

Telstra, iinet, Dodo seem to be the ISPs that route properly through Perth. TPG, Optus and others seem to go via Sydney and the South Pacific before going back to Singapore.

Have a look through this thread and maybe find someone who has done a trace route in your specific area.

Hi slide.

Thanks for that. Yes dodo seems to provide a decent latency. How are they for congestion at peak times? I might opt for an interim solution of a 5gb prepaid 4g from Telstra with 365 days expiry. Hopefully moving house in the near future so will pick best isp in that location.

Dodo never dies :-)

I normally don't have any issues with congestion with Dodo.

Having said that the last couple of weeks have been odd (lagey, poor hit reg)during the evening. But I live in a small town in the Adelaide Hills so it might be something local to me which has upset my internet. I did reboot my router after a power failure and it seemed better for a while.

Good luck.

Thanks.

Have been testing a 4G usb adapter as a secondary WAN connection. Routing all other traffic through the ADSL2 and MWO through the 4G.

So far this is doing the trick while not going to hard on the expensive 4G. I'm still tweaking it and will post my findings.

Using a DSL AC68u modem router.

For a while there (2 years ago) I only had Optus wireless and was playing MWO through it exclusively. As it had a data cap I was very conscious of how much I used. Fortunately the packet sizes for MWO aren't all that large and even over a few hours with TS running and chatting the whole time it didn't use much. Typically is was less than 10mB for a 3-4 hour session. It may well be that you have hit the best solution for yourself.

Whilst you have in all likelihood used it already, Whirlpool's FAQ about ISP's is extremely handy.

It's just a pity their broadband choice tool no longer shows ISP options at your exchange based on phone number. : /

(full disclosure: Internode customer here. Have been really, really happy with their service for the past 8 years with no issues across 2 properties).

So to update I churned away from TPG last week and went to Dodo.

I read up and it stated Dodo on sells both Telstra and Optus, but as my phone is connected to Telstra it ended up being Telstra. My cost went down $10 per month, my quota has gone up to Unlimited and my latency to MWO is now:

142 to Oceanic (down from about 300)
260 to NA (down from about 315-325)

MWO is not hugely playable for me and I am a happy chappy. No lock in contract. They do try to sell a lot of other stuff but for now at least I am just going to log on an play the hell out of this for a while :)

Awesome.

People bag Dodo but I have honestly never had any issues with them that you wouldn't get with any other ISP.

See you on the battle field.

I'm using DODO, they actually use the OPTUS network, ping is really good, 150, and peak time is no problem, I've been with them since they started and that's a lot of years, Telstra is the best but way too expensive, TPG is what I used to be with but they went to sh*t, IINET is a joke as are ADAM and the rest of the small companies, I live in regional Australia with the nearest capital city 600klms away and have never had a problem except for acts of god, storm, flood etc. where they are or here.

I'm on iinet and getting ~130-140 from Melbourne. I've only been dumped from a match about twice in the last month and a half, but those were Oceanic server issues (upon reconnecting, discovered most players had also been disconnected).

I have just noticed this myself, Im in Perth WA and we used to get routes from Perth to Adelaide then to Sydney and then to NA, now it seems to be taking the long path around, going Hong Kong to Japan then across to NA.

Where as before my ping was 270ish to 300 on the NA servers im now getting 350-360ms. Iinet are saying they dont do the routes and its not their fault. This has only happened recently.

Looks like it is time to change providers

iiNet ADSL2+ here in Burnie TAS does alright, going no higher than 170, do miss my fibre to the premise connection from Launceston though, never got a chance to try the Oceanic server with it before I moved.
