Their hotfix died horribly and broke something....so they had to revert to a backup....which takes quite long....

seems so - some forum-members lost their faction ;)

Everyone who owns a computer should know that **** happens.

Everyone who professionally works in IT knows that you have a TESTING ENVIRONMENT so that crap does not happen on the end that is facing the customer.....

And everyone with a testing environment knows that you can't "test" the hot system with all users in it. Not that we got so far.

My guess would be that the server potato updated to windows 10 and that microsoft deleted all the pirated games on it
:P

Game servers are back, all systems nominal. Apologies to all for the extended downtime!

They also know that no matter how much you test, something can still go wrong. That's why you have a plan for rollback or mitigation of potential problems, and have someone setting appropriate expectations to your customers by communicating with them and making sure they feel you understand their concerns. Oh wait... that's exactly what they did.

Absolutely. And nothing ever breaks between staging and production. Oh, no, not ever. In the vast history of mankind, no such tales have ever been told.

Can confirm; work in IT.

The matches are BS again. They were getting better over the past 2 days. Was the PSR system removed?

Everyone who has professionally worked in IT for long time knows, that there is absolutely no matter how much you test, adjust and make system bombproof, it can somehow always go horribly wrong. It's like combination of wind changes direction is Island and simultaniously crow sings in Siberia equals that unicorns attack servers and you are totally ****** :D

CWI does, just played a few matches. It can be fun at times, depending on the opposition.

No doubt about that. We could go into redundancy constructs and patching one side then switching and still having a running old system to switch over in case of boom and all that kinda crap, but let's not.

Let's just say PGI has an unnatural history (IMHO) of unforeseen differences between staging and production. Maybe tells you something about their staging system....or maybe I am just too negative. Anyway....happy it works again.

Claymore, I would put it "everyone in IT knows that you try it our out on a test server first, THEN MAKE THE DOWNTIME WINDOW EXTRA LARGE SO THAT YOU LOOK LIKE A CHAMP WHEN YOU SUCCEED IN A FRACTION OF THE TIME AND NOT LIKE A CHUMP IF CRAP HAPPENS."

Then you would have to start it with "every professional in IT..." ;-) Thats pretty advanced project management stuff your talking about...

Really....who are we to talk. I am pretty sure they have reasons for doing things the way they do them and just because others do it differently to avoid embarrassing service outages does not mean they could employ similar techniques in their business case...

I work on systems where I have little control over the production environments (SQL2000 through SQL2014)... I factor a backup and a restore into the downtime even when it's a 10 seconds SQL script...
