So I have been running the same Evga 780i board for the last 7? years. Started its life with a q6700 @ 3.2. Later on I was gifted a QX9650 that happily runs 4.0 and a 770GTX for a bit of computer work. also have 8gb corsair dominator ddr2 1066.

I have a case, 1000w corsair, the GTX770, fans and drives that could all be reused.
I think I could sell my QX9650, 780i and Corsair dominator for $300-350ish.
I could throw the project another $150-200 or so dollars (I only play mwo so upgrading is somewhat silly)

Would like to play on medium without the sudden drops into the red. Added bonus for additional performance.

What would be a good future proof processor and board combo? (I tend to fav intel but not a fanboy)
Where are we generation wise? Should I wait for the next gen stuff to either drop prices or radically change expectations?
Is DDR3 here to stay awhile?

PS, I am a big fan of unlocked multipliers as overclocking gives good future proofing and I'm big into bang for the buck.

Thanks everyone. Have not looked into tech advances in quite some time.

Either you're out of touch with the internet for years, or pure trolling.
DDR3 is a standard for older technology, DDR4 is the go-to standard for enthusiasts for over a year and is the current standard for Intels mainstream-platform. There are plans to support DDR3 on certain x170-mainboards, but that's only useful if you're a die hard fan of reusing RAM you've bought years ago. Atm DDR4 is more or less cost-equivalent to DDR3.

There will be no pricedrops because Intel lacks competition. AMD is - for gaming and enthusiasts - more or less out until Zen reaches the shelves, which might be in the summer or fall 2016.
Untill then, your best bet would be an Intel i5-6600K. More or less inside your budget. Anything else would be pointless. If you're really good at OC and have fun, buy a i5-4690K. Devils Canyon is roughly 5 - 10% faster if your OC is really good. With "usual" OC, the performance is more or less equal, but the chipset of Skylake is way more modern than the Haswell-Chipsets. Which are refurbished Sandy Bridge Chipsets designwise.

Your best bet for MWO is a high-clocked Intel Quad and Win10. If you're low on money, buy only 8GB DDR4, but 16GB should be the advise if you can afford it.

If you can get your hands on a cheap - really CHEAP - set with an Intel Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge/Haswell Quadcore, these are still good. Preferably Sandy Bridge or Haswell (only Devils Canyon) will net you the most for your money. Ivy and early Haswell CPUs got thermic issues if you're OCing.

Most of the above is true.
DDR4 is not the go to standard it's the early adopter standard, and other than spending more money on both the board and DDR4, it also offers little to no benefit in gaming because it trades higher freq for higher latency.
http://www.anandtech...a-and-crucial/8
DDR3 will still be supported on some skylake boards, it isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Likewise, 8GB of RAM is perfectly fine, as you state your only really playing MWO and thus 16GB is definitely not required.

So sticking inside your budget you have a few options

I recently went from an i5 2500 to an i5 4690K running at 4.5 and it made a huge improvement in my fps.

What has been said above looks right. I'm actually surprised at how close the pricing is between the new Skylake CPU and board compared to the one gen older 4690K build. If you were going to buy a new board and CPU you might as well spend the little bit extra on one of the 6600K builds above just for future-proof's sake (which may or may not play out).

One thing is what board do you have now? Can you improve CPU-wise on what you have now?

I think QX9650 is older gen by a few gens now so off the top of my head I don't think you have much option to improve there... but I'm not sure.

Ehh

If you need performance now, well, go for Intel now with its Skylake
The generation before would also still be fine, saving a bit of $ on buying DDR3, which is cheaper

On boards
Want to OC too? Get the ones with a Z in front of the number, if not you can take the bit cheaper H variants I guess
Boards are not really problematic, you need to know how much bells and whistles you want and go shopping accordingly
Need all 10 fan controllers? Need an extra pump connector? Audio solution that's separated from the rest of the board for less noise?
Small tip, I have my IvyBridge i5 on a Z77 Sabertooth(which was a 250-300$ board) and same performance then on a 50$ board before that
The Z just lets you OC the CPU, but stock had the same performance and stability

If you can wait till next summer wait for AMD's Zen and Intels counter to it

As long as MWO has no DX12 support (and Devs that can make good use of it, no idea if they could really) stronger cores are king
Which means Intel still at the moment

I'd go this route. There's no real reason to go with Haswell for MWO when we now have a CPU that performs better on a per-clock basis. MWO will eat every bit of that IPC that it can. Plus, you know, it's newer and more shiny.

Something like this would be my choice. Definitely Skylake/DDR4.

I'm Thinking 2400MHz CAS 10 is Better Than 2133MHz CAS 15, even if the Faster/Quicker RAM is DDR3, if DDR4, i'd say go for 3000MHz CAS 15

Hello again guys. I want to thank everyone for their advice in this thread. Did some more research and finally made the plunge this last week. New specs are:

I5 6600k @ 4.5
Thermal-take water 3.0 extreme AIO (Would not have been my pick for an AIO but it was given to me, minus fans)
8gb Corsair Vengeance 3000mhz
Asus Z170-AR @ stock 100mhz bc
Corsair 450D Case (I love this thing, all of my cases have been hand me downs/salvage or very cheap)
SeaGate EVO 256gb SSD (nice to finally make this jump)
Corsair HX1000 Power Supply (re-used from old build)
EVGA 770 Classified (re-used)
and some re-used WD blacks.

Was getting around 40fps with dips as low as 19fps @ 1080 with low and medium setting before. Now I'm getting 100+ on a combination of high and very high, 1080.
