OP: Technically they didn't reach Terra, but they came dangerously close, prompting Comstar to suggest a proxy battle elsewhere. On the surface of all things this was intended to minimize the damage to the cradle of mankind. But if you keep the bigger picture in mind, it also saved the integrity of the Clans as a whole. It was decreed that the first Clan to reach Terra would become ilClan henceforth.

Quote

For the day will come and our kin will stand
On Terra's firm soil, ready to rebuild
The Star League with their hearts and hands.
But who shall lead? Upon whose shoulders
Will the burden lie? The answer is the test;
The test is the journey. Whichever Clan
Carves its way through the barbarians
To reach that fabled cradle of us all
Shall be the vehicle of the League's rebirth. Upon
The Star League throne shall sit that Clan's
Wisest Khan. So should it be -- So shall it be.

-- The Remembrance, Passage 72, Verse 22, Lines 14-24

Even though the ilKhan was calling the shots during the invasion, all pretence of working together would have fallen aside at some point and might even have caused the Clans to turn against each other in order to claim the ultimate prize. By any means necessary. There is no doubt that dishonorable behavior was possible even in the highest echelons of the Clans, as evidenced by the grave sin committed by saKhan Vandervahn Chistu of the Jade Falcon Clan.

The Clans, as clans, never get closer than Tukk.

Peroid. Dot. Never.

In very much the very same way that in all the Star Wars universe, there never was, nor will be, anyone called Darth Revan.

The two are very much alike. Someone who happened to have some cash to blow rented ownership of a popular franchise long enough to try to cram some badly written 13 year old's fan fiction (badly written, as in, worse than the average 13 year old's fan fiction) down the populace's throat as canon.
