This is also why I'm very interested in this game, since former FASA people are involved

Bonfire is literally the only book I've ever read that was not a hard copy. From what I understand printing it is still being planned whenever Catalyst solves its novel-printing problems, which I really hope happens soon.

You do realize that quite a few of the people who worked on BattleTech at WizKids/FanPro and are still working on it at Catalyst are also 'former FASA people'. right? WizKids was created by one of FASA's co-founders, even...

The Clans did not bother me at first because they seemed like monsters in Dungeons & Dragons. You fight them in games because they are overpowered beasts, but no one really uses them full-time in clubs. I always felt that that was FASA's intention because they produced very little source material for them relative to the Inner Sphere, but then stuff like MechWarrior 2 created a mass of people that knew nothing but the Clans. Then the Clans started to bother me because the munchkins bothered me.

I still think the clans were ill-conceived, but it pales in comparison to the BS of Dark Ages/MechAssault. Dark Ages was a blatant cash grab/dumbing down that raped the IP....it feels they said "you know we don't really like where this is, lets skip forward 100 years and completely rewrite the way everything works. Then we'll just slap the brand name on it and watch the money roll in!"
Clan Invasion = Return of the Jedi (annoying ewoks...not as good as the first two)
Dark Ages = Prequal (******* jar jar binks BULLSHIT...utterly unacceptable)

WizKids was founded by one of FASA's co-founders, but BattleTech was licensed out to FanPro immediately. WizKids also created "Dark Age" the year after buying BattleTech from FASA. WizKids was purchased by Topps, which closed WizKids and then sold off its assets except for BattleTech, which had been licensed to Catalyst.
Dark Age altered the course of BattleTech because it set a period of time in the future where everything was different. They then started to alter BattleTech to transition to Dark Age. Just because WizKids was founded by Weisman does not mean that WizKids, FanPro, Topps, or anyone else involved continued the expected story arc from FASA in the way FASA would have.

I look at it like this. FASA produced ~25 field manuals and sourcebooks about the Inner Sphere compared to just ~7 for the Clans. Post-FASA, the Inner Sphere was still disproportionately dealt with relative to the Clans with both received relatively little new works, but they produced 10 books about the Jihad/Dark Age for CBT.
FASA had a focus, and it wasn't on the Clans. Post-FASA, the transition almost immediately went to Dark Age and transitioning BattleTech into Dark Age.

So with my snob hat on: No, the Clans never advance beyond the truce line, becuase thats where the canon I choose to recognize ends.
I agree, my Favorite times for CBT, is between 3057-3067 (although 3085-3090) (and aswell as when we kick the vipers out of our OZ

The name Jordan Weisman sound familiar to anyone? FASA, WizKids and Smith & Tinker are all founded by him, also the co-creator of the property we're discussing as well as a few others. He has never lost control of Battletech,(although electronic licensing has been funky at times until S&T). If you don't like Dark Age, I understand, but it was a successful run and did keep the franchise vital while Iron Wind blisters collected dust(unfortunately). Calling it non-canon, however, is definitely not a fact that holds water based on 'FASA losing control', because Jordan Weisman never lost control.

At least some of the books were interesting, however. Mostly the stuff with Tara Campbell, Anastasia Kerensky, and Malvina Hazen. Basically everything else is a struggle to even bother reading.

Steel Wolves ARE NOT A CLAN
http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Steel_Wolves
The leader was a Clan Wolf trueborn by the name of Kal Radick. He had formed the Wolves out of warriors from both the Arc-Royal and "Crusader" factions of the Clan, with the professed intention of reclaiming Terra for the Clans. However, Kal Radick for the most part merely conducted raids on backwater Republic worlds for the goal of gaining more war material for the expected drive on Terra. He also cultivated personal loyalty to himself, in an effort to cement his grip on the command of the Steel Wolves.
