I would argue that if you're even thinking about buying any engine over a 350 rating be it XL or standard, think very hard about what you're doing and why specifically you would need that engine, because 350 is the point where tonnage starts to increase a lot and there's a good chance you'll be more effective with a smaller engine and more of something ( anything ) else.
Keep in mind that compared to the 350, each additional step up only adds 1.43% of what the 350 already gives you in speed while you're adding three to five times as much in tonnage.

I don't disagree with that. It's also important to really look at the individual steps. There are odd sweet spots and overlarge jumps. I find great use for the STD335, weird though that sounds, because it's a series of small steps up to it and larger ones shortly after. The STD305/XL305 I loathe because both add 1.5 tons over the 300 for almost no purpose. Most builds are really "good enough" with the 25-increment (or slightly above a la XL255/XL280) and it really only makes sense to buy the oddball engines to truly optimize a comp-worthy or favorite build.

Please note that this is excellent advice that I'm completely unable to follow and thus I personally own virtually every useable engine in the game and many copies of the really good ones. :D Seems I always need one more XL295 or XL300...

I find the 255XL is great on lights and mediums and the 300XL on mediums and heavies.

What lights do you use the XL255 in? IMO, the only light that shines with that engine is the SDR.

Great thread input!
Kmieciu brought up a great point. Looking at those
mechs you avg about 1m c-bills by buying them
together. This made me look at other mech/engine
combos. The wiki has a stock engine list, but it's
out of date. I noticed Hero and Champions also
feature several XLs.
I think building a engine pool is important when
grinding a line as you can jump quickly into another
mech. If 1 Cat had a XL275 and 1 had a XL300 both
would be playable.
My XL300 is solved, I purchased the Maruder pre
order ( ya I'm addicted)and it comes with 2 XL300s.
One other thought, the bigger engines offer faster
torso twist...this might be a whole other thread.

Forget about wiki. http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ uses current data extracted straight from the game files.
Use CTRL+F to find mechs that come stock with the engine you want.

Ya the Spider for sure. Also use it on Ravens so I can pack more firepower, same reason I use it on the Cicada which in my head is also a light.

Yeah, good point, I brainfarted, my RVN-4X uses it, forgot about that. Makes a slow CDA though, I run XL300s in those, felt like cheating when I used to run an XL285 in my dual PPC 3M.

You beat me trying to edit. Raven for sure like the 3 LL build, but I'm pretty sure the CDA uses the 300XL. Still, all spiders and makes for some hard hitting Ravens, and use it in a few mediums as well.

Often the XL engine that comes with mechs are in that "not optimum", like the 275XL. But they are worth using if you have them in your inventory.

I know when I was newer, when I bought my 3 for a chassis, I tried to make sure to hit the one that had an XL in it. CDA-3M, CN9-D, TBT-7M, CTF-3D etc.
