I have a 80gb Vertex2 and a 240gb Vertex3. Along with 2 , 300gb Raptors.

I run the OCZ Vertex2 as my OS drive. Had it for a bit over a year. Here is its current life.

I also just purchased a OCZ Vertex3 for my programs and games. Here is its current life.

I notice the OS SSD is much faster than my Raptor ever was. Gaming with the SSD is a little hard to tell. I know things load faster, but overall advantage once the game is live. Might not be noticable. It would depend on what games/programs you were running. Some are more HD intesive than others.

so does that mean the bigger they are the less time they'll last?
I mean I can see if you wrote every day.. but what if you just put what you want on it and then don't write to it anymore (except for updates)

well SSD's aren't that expensive either really. Compared to HHD they are, but you don't need that kind of access speed for bulk data like movies, documents and music. Been looking into one and i'm probably gonna get a 250 for OS and for games I play. Most games I uninstall after a few months anyways, unless i play it constantly, so I only will have 3 or 4 games on it at a time.

I like to keep my games downloaded so I can just play a game when i'm in the type of mood to play it (unless its one of those games where you play through it once and then your done with it) but yeah.. i'm a steam user so I try to keep the ones that were really interesting downloaded and ready if a friend or something messages me and goes "hey, up for <insert game name here>"

if a 512 goes on sale.. i'll probably get it if my money is straight...

Raptors will last....

Any engineer will tell you that anything with moving parts will not last.

There is only one controller that's notorious for making problems: Sandforce. That's why you should avoid SSDs from OCZ at all cost.

Your info is out of date and lazily wrong - OCZ fixed their firmware on the Agility 3 and Vertex 3 (the only 2 drive lines affected).

Mine only does good things for me.

No, the bigger they are, wont matter. What matters, is the amount of times you write to the disk. As in, adding files or information. Thats the reason my OS SSD hasnt really aged. Its just Windows and my Virus software. The Program/Games is less because i needed to install everything on it. Once you install your software on a SSD. The only time you need to write to that drive again is for updates or new programs. I would suggest not putting videos, pictures or music on a SSD. Most people add photos and music to there hard drives all the time. Something that just isnt worth putting on a SSD.

A good secondary option to a large ssd is a cheap 60 gig ssd for a system drive and a couple of cheap 7200rpm sata II drives and a quality raid 0 caching controller card.

This lets you get very fast data transfer but also a very large storage area for far cheaper than a single large ssd.

The ssd will still be far faster but tbh you won't really notice any particular loading lag except for maybe the program initial load.
