Isn't that the purpose of hardware test? They will just release the Kraken and watch how servers work. Also more people = more chances for unrevealed game problems to appear = more b******ing about lags, bugs and weird parts of game mechanics - that leads to improvements and fixes. That's how mmo beta-testing actually works. For real testing and recreating of reported problematic situations most devs have their own testing teams, who's getting paid for work as any other employee.
That's how was pretty much every game beta I were in. And I participated in lots of such betas.

Well playing the game is the best way to find the bugs, more people playing better chances of bugs being spotted. The reliance is on the participants reporting the bugs clearly so that they can be corrected.
I would imagine that focus testing would have been done before this stage but it's always a good method for getting concentrated test results.
