Ok it takes awhile but with the XBOX Accessories app on Windows (and Xbox One itself) after the firmware update to the controller you can remap it. You MIGHT be able to do this on the console itself if you don't have windows 10 installed (can't verify)

anyway took me awhile but basically it's totally doable, adjust the sensitivity etc.

Throttle & turning are on the left stick, pitch & yaw are on the right stick. buttons mapped swapped etc.

Sure this isn't as stable KB/M but it's an alternative for couch players or non-competitive types.

Posting for those that are interested.

Forget using one stick for throttle and turning - ESPECIALLY a gamepad stick.

Gamepad thumbsticks have a round "throw" (ie the range of motion is round, unlike a flightstick, which is square). This means that if you are turning at max rate, you cannot change speed AT ALL, or if changing speed at max rate, you cannot turn AT ALL.

Furthermore, you get horrific "bleed through" - when you try to turn, you unintentionally change speed a bit. When you try to change speed, you unintentionally turn a bit.
You can remedy this somewhat by setting a big DeadZone, but this just aggravates the "round throw" issues I mentioned above.

You would be way better off moving the throttle to the triggers and just using the left stick for steering.

But in general, a gamepad is the absolute worst control method there is for MWO. A Steam Controller would be a lot better than a regular xbox pad though, and even better than a regular flightstick, because you get mouse-style aiming via the trackpad.
