I'm not a real big fan of IS XL engines on anything larger than 55 tons and a base threshold speed of 81 kph. I do have a few heavies and assaults that have XLs but for the most part, I stick with standard engines in any IS chassis that I expect to brawl with on a consistent basis. I have a couple of designs that I've been very happy with and would like to see what innovative designs other players have come up with over the years.

My Boar's Head - the original design is a prime example of why I dislike IS XLs. I usually got dead shortly after contact with the enemy by losing a side torso. I made some changes that I think kept to the spirt of the mech but made it deadlier overall. I'm pretty sue I've surprised several pilots who though it was an easy kill.

BOAR'S HEAD

My Black Widow - still surprisingly effective ... has one of the better KDRs of all my heavies

BLACK WIDOW

My Grid Iron - Gauss in side torso + XL + 64.8 kph = bad for me. This design is simpler, faster and works better for me.

GRID IRON

My Enforcer's - tanky and tough. I wish the 4P had jump jets though ...

Well I don't know about the best STD mechs of all time, but nobody who has any clue about what their doing puts an XL in a Stalker, the engine caps too low and the side torsos are (fortunately) magnets for enemy fire.

That being said, an elited STK-5M with five SRM6s, 3 ERLLs, and a STD 300 is a forced to be reckoned with.

On a side note, there's little reason not to run an XL on the GI because, in the immortal words of somebody I have completely forgotten, "if you have lost your Gauss Rifle, you have lost your reason to live".

In all seriousness the XL's speed and extra tonnage for self defense weapons well outweighs the loss in durability for a mech that can armor roll as well as the hunchy. You could try a build like this GRID IRON or this more secondline sniper build GRID IRON.

Completely unrelated, but are you a connoisseur of dakka? BLACK WIDOW is.

This is a the case for many right torsos on Marauders.

I may have to re-evaluate the Grid Iron with an XL. I've been getting better with gauss rifle of late and the GI does have an insane cool down rate ...

Well, I figured that there's at least one or two ways to run a light with a STD engine...

Stun your enemy when your ZombieCust Mk.II does not die on a ST explosion. You can keep going and do the same damage because your weapons are all CT mounted!

The Undead Crow relies on the RVN's ungodly massive ST hitbox to shield your CT from further damage. RVN-2X has a shield arm on the left side that can take a bit of punishment as well.

My zombie Centurion.

Lose a hs or down the CT LLas to 2 meds for more armour if you like, either way this can dish out and take a lot of damage.

Not really. The MAD can shield and lose the LT before the RT. The GI has a RT that cannot be shielded effectively.

I run a similar build with a LPL in the CT, with fewer heatsinks. I really enjoy this mech, the quirks are very good and I think most people don't expect a STD engine IS medium. Someone suggested replacing the LPL with two MPL, I think that also makes sense, but it's still a lot of fun in any case.

So far the only reason I seen to get an STD engine is for brawling. The ones I approve have SRM's,good speed and survive-abilty. Also like some of these guys pointed out if the mech has huge side torso's like the marauder you may want to be long range or use an STD engine.

I wish I had the c-bills to try out every mech but these are two I bought, tried and had the most luck with.

Personally I favor the hunchback, this specific model as my favorite so far in the game.
