The best you can do with that Motherboard is an A10-6800K (@120$)

This would, at best, be a minor upgrade in FPS.

Switching to something like the setup Goose posted(Haswell i5, Z97 Mobo; @270$) would be the best bang for the buck upgrade option, IMO. You could go even cheaper and get an H81 Mobo, putting the total upgrade cost for this option in the neighbourhood of 225$.

Then just go for a cheap micro ATX board.
http://pcpartpicker....&sort=a8&page=1

Select one with a reasonable price and keep in mind what memory you have (QVL).
I'd recommend asus but honestly, in that pricerange you can expect every manufactor to use the cheapest conductors.

Besides, is the G3258 boxed? If yes, the fan on the included cooler is rather trashy, it get's the job done but it's stupidly loud.

Greetings dr lao. Dont rush with the change of your platform and waste your money. CPU of your son is ok for this game to run even on very high settings at 1080p. I've included links to the performance test of cpus and gpus in MWO. Its in russian but i hope u would got the idea. The bottleneck for this game is your son's gpu. If you want to upgrade CPU the best choice on the market at this moment is athlon 860k or 760k (it depends on revision and bios version of your mobo). These CPUs have the same performance in games so there is no difference between them. Believe me its the best choice considering its cost/efficiency ratio. And you dont need to switch your motherboard. Here is the link for your mobo CPU compatibility list
http://www.gigabyte....p.aspx?pid=4393 (i dont know your revision so i post the list for the "worst" oldest case)
Also i think you can call to the gygabyte tech support to be sure which CPU you can install
This is the links for the GPU and CPU tests (its the original and its in russian so just scroll down to the FPS numbers and look for athlons). If you wont get it I can download screenshots to imgur.
CPUs
http://www.overclock...ditelnosti.html
GPUs
http://www.overclock...ditelnosti.html

The conclusion is following: spend your budget on GF960 it will run ok with your power supply. Spend the rest on beer or the present to your wife or MWO packs or whatever. CPU upgrade is optional and i think for the cost of Athlon 760k it wont be a great burden for your pocket

Best wishes and smooth playing

P.S. sorry for any mistakes

Minor addition, the game is running on the GeForce and not on the Radeon from the A10-5800k?

Nvidia control panel - 3D, Power Management mode - change from adaptive to max performance. You can also set a profile for MWO if you do not want it to run on the nvidia all the time.

computer's control panel, power options, set to best performace

Make sure the heatsinks are clear of any dust build up.

Set post-processing to lowest and turn off any AA.

Also, is it running the 64bit version? Try running it with 32bit version. The link below provides instructions on how to run the 32bit, but make sure the game is patched each time using the normal shortcut.

Annnnd that link was a lot moar informative when I made it. Posted Image

So: I plugged in you model mobo, then asked for compatible CPUs, and the two that seem like upgrades are here.

I don't think you will get very far with this gambit …

You can put a A10 7800k or above and get 2x the performance.. but those chip are made for systems with integrated graphics and no video card, ..

No need to upgrade the gpu.

Just the cpu and mobo should be enough to get rid of those extreme drops.

With that slow GPU you wont get much fun out of any demanding game.

128Bit Memory Bus is half what a good Graphic Card offers and soon you will need at least 4GB Vram or you pay for it with low settings and bad performance.

A test shows it barely does 25 FPS in Crysis 3 at low settings.

Your GPU is way beyond the curve.

Except as we know, the GPU in MWO is secondary to the CPU.
And people have managed with 750.

Yet the GPU can not be ingored - if it can run Crysis 3 barely at 25 FPS with a very good CPU how should it be able to run MWO with a mediocre CPU ?

That CPU should be able to deliver twice the FPS!

I had a Toshiba laptop with an A10. Even at the lowest settings on everything that's all I got. Lights and close in brawling I would frequently drop to 4fps and stay there for multi-second chunks of time when I needed fastest response.

It just doesn't have the horsepower, I'm sorry to say. Till you upgrade to a better computer, run LRM heavies and assaults. that's all you can do and get some enjoyment out of the game if it is still enjoyable to you.
