Clan non-omnimechs can be equipped with STD and XL engines. Do the XL ones explode at side torso destruction like the inner sphere version or are they protected like proper clan engines in omnimechs?

They are Clan XL engines, consume 2 slots in each side torso and do not blow up on a single side torso destruction.

For the cries of XL engine unfairness.

(The Clan XL engines wouldn't be much of an issue if the engine health did something. Since engines currently have 15 health, if you could use a weapon that could do through-armor crits or just regular crits like a crit-seeker weapon... just hammer into somewhere the engine's at and blam. '3 slots' destroyed, 1 dead engine. Problem is it'd have to work both ways...)

(Nothing says we can't use the mech's barrier armor rating as a threshold for this. Default BAR for a mech is 10, meaning to get a proper through armor crit, your weapon must deliver at least 10 damage to the same point. In MWO that's PPC, ER PPC, Gauss Rifle, IS AC/10, IS AC/20, and both versions of LPL. Well LPL presents a problem, but otherwise seems pretty sound and the IS would have far more options for doing it than the Clans...)

Thanks, so only reason to use the STD engine over XL would be in order to equip larger weapons such as an AC20 I guess.

Unnecessary; Clan UAC/20 / AC/20 / LBX-20 are smaller than IS versions and can fit in the side torsos with an XL.

The only reason would be to continue living after losing both side torsos, provided you had a CT or Head weapon. Or to pack in 3 UAC/5s per ST.
