Your thoughts would be appreciated, deciding which set of Mechs to buy next. I would like to stay within the IS and am more typically a brawler but dont mind sitting back and picking from a distance. Either way, Looking for what the title describes. Thanks in advance

For me that's the Vindicator in a nutshell. It's fast, JJ's, good torso/arm twist limits and it has a variety of weapon hardpoints which is how i like it.
Not good for boating weapons but for those that like having a bit of everything it's near perfect.

As for quirks and such i don't give a damn.
It's big for it's weight right now but it's going to be rescaled.

Although, the Vindi is generally considered one of the worst in the game.

The Shadowhawk can do just about everything too with its variants, as far as IS mediums go.

Warhammer and Marauder are also both very versatile mechs. The Warhammer, though it doesn't have JJ's in any of the variants, has a lot of payload variety. The Marauder has a load of different payloads as well, but is more right-side focused in the builds department and two of the variants can carry Jump Jets.

Hunchbacks have several different, highly-specialized variants, but they're brawly.

From a meta players perspective yes. It's because it's not good at boating and how it's weapon hardpoints is placed.
But when i searched for a medium mech the Vindicator was the only IS mech that didn't fail me. For me it performed better than anything else amongst the mediums.

I can only speak for how i've experienced that mech.

OK, speaking as a "meta" player, versatility within a single mech is a bad thing, because you will lose to mechs that are specialized and playing in their area of specialization. Rule #1 of successful mech building is to build a mech that does one thing dominantly and play to that strength. So, OP, if you want a jack of all trades mech, I can only recommend you reconsider or resign yourself to being mediocre. If, however, you want a jack of all trades chassis, a few of those exist. Admittedly, most are on the clan side (TBR and SCR remain the two most versatile chassis, though neither of them is as dominant as they once were). On the IS side, a lot of folks will recommend the HBK and while it can do a lot of things, it doesn't really do anything exceptionally. The HBK-IIC is a bit different in that it can do a number of things very well (though is still weak as a missile brawler due to the mech's fragility).

If I want a do anything mech I bring a TBR prime with Gauss and 2 erppcs. It does everything including bringing 30% extra chills.

If you want a medium get a shadow hawk or the upcoming Cyclops.

If you want a mech that fails at everything get the vindi :P

Pardon me...i mean no disrespect Terciel but there is more to the game than specialising in a single range and slugging it out there.
My Vindicator 1AA build is something like this. 280XL, 6JJ's, 2x SPL, 1 ML, 1 SRM6, ER PPC.

I use the tactics in this link and it works fine.

Versatile? For my money I gotta go Quickdraw. Can be built to do anything. Only lacks ballistics, unless you count the Hero. 4 configured properly is a fine CW deck no mater what map.

I really enjoy my ballistics, with that said I love to run around dakka dakka'ing everything in sight. I see the Hunchback has a fair amount everything. When I mean versatile my main point would be within the three variants needed to master them, they can all be used primarily for one thing in mind and are very proficient at it. Kills are primary attraction, but I enjoy just putting the hurt on people and support my team in K's

found the hunchback to be diverse in it's variants, yet effective. You have the 9 laser vomit, the ac20 whackamole, and the one with the almost silly lrm10 quirks. The lrm version is stupid effective when stagger fired and perked out as the reload is 2seconds and maybe a skosh so it just never stops firing, yet it's a hunchie and can tank while spotting for itself and carry a couple lasers for needs. The ac20 is self explanatory and just wanders with the herd until it can get close enough. The laser vomit is silly good with a mix of small and med lasers upclose. They are all pretty tanky except if you run the xl engine on maybe the lrm version for more ammo and a couple med lasers.

Dunno another chasis that has the variables the hunchie has and my experience is limited (I do prefer lights or heavies over meds tho).

The shadow hawk is very versatile. It is no longer meta, but you can run all weapon types an several combinations that are mostly viable.

of those Mechs mentioned above, (Shawk and Jager) I already own and have mastered. Along with my Spider and Atlas', I was hoping to just increase my arsenal but from the looks of it my arsenal is fine. Maybe ill go Clan, I ran that trial Scat yesterday and fell in love

Most versatile mech in the game is obviously the Battlemaster.

They call it Battlemaster for a reason.

As for the most versatile Battlemaster build? 3M without a doubt.

Two ways to look at this, versatility within chassis, or versatility within individual variant.

Hunchie's pretty strong in terms of chassis, you have excellent AC, LRM, SRM, gauss, and pure energy builds.

In terms of individual variant, my vote would be on my old warhorse, the Shadow Hawk 2D. With three missile hardpoints, three energy in the arms, and that kicka** shoulder ballistic, there's no single meta boat build, but you can do a surprising number of things decently. If I had to run a single mech for the rest of my days, I'd look no further.

Most versatile, handsdown is the Timberwolf. It CAN do everything. A build for every playstyle and mission. Splat, lrm, ballistics, vomit, poptart. Its the best all round mech in game.

Just get Timbergods.
Strong in so many ways, and Omni means you have huge choice in configuration.

Kodiak. Complete customization 'cause it's a battlemech. MASC, JJ, Lazorboat, Ballisticboat, Missileboat. Pick yours.

Problem: it's real cash only until autumn (probably, just check the FAQs).

I vote for the Shadow Hawk any day. Even tough I dont use it that much nowadays (got alot of mechs to level up).
Hope the Phoenix Hawk will be somethings for me too, it has the things I want so..
And looking away from meta, hell even I want to buy the Vindicator someday Posted Image

And thats my opinon for IS mediums only.

Im not sure. But regarding overall versatility, I guess the Timber Wolf is still the king, isnt it?
