The chat window automatically opens when I hit other keys so I have all this spam on my screen, I have to keep hitting,esc etc. It is so annoying I am tempted to turn chat off.

Hey man, just a suggestion: be specific.
"...when I hit other keys..." Is pretty vague. Are you talking about in-game, or in the Mechlab, or...what? What buttons are opening the chat window that aren't supposed to? Are these button mapped correctly? Does the chat window open like it should when pressing the normal chat window key? Got a screenshot or reproducible steps? There is nowhere near enough information in your bug report for anyone to address it.

Did your chat keys (default 'y'/'u') somehow get bound to a movement/fire key?
