Why do people think mechwarrior is designed for joysticks?

Had an arguement with someone on another website about the game. Said things like joysticks will never be competative, a mouse is far superior for pinpoint attacks like torsos and legs. Just tore into joysticks in a long tirade like I and everyone else planning on using a joystick had NO idea they were inferior.

Remember the days before killstreaks, headshots, quickscoping, e-sports, constant min maxing, premade vs pug beatdowns, kill/death and win/loss ratios?

What happened to playing a game for fun over the last 10 years?

When did playing a game as a fun simulator become an everything rides on your performance stress fest.

Because it just feels wrong to pilot a mech with a mouse imo.

A lot of it is just the immersion factor...

Since everyone seems to be liking this post, thought I should clarify...

Tried a joystick when I first got into closed beta... Unplugged it about halfway through my first match... I have gone to the dark side of mouse and keyboard... And honestly, I don't think I'll be going back. Joystick was great for MW4, but I just don't see how it can compete with the M&K with MWO's reticle system.

If anyone who liked that post wants to remove their like, I understand. :P

It was designed for joysticks, but that was in the age where everyone had one. That isn't the case anymore, so you can't design a game around it. And as neat as they are, they really are crap for anything except flight sims.

In other words, the days before multiplayer. Any competitive multiplayer game ever had these things, and MWO is a competitive multiplayer game.

I dont mind, but your correct, a joystick at least to me will always feel more mechwarrior than even the best mouse.

I play with my newly purchased X52...

Why? Yeah HOTAS is cool and I could gush over the multi weapons control. My main reason? Because looking out of a cockpit with a headset on calling contacts while using a flight stick and throttle like the books, is just way more fun than flicking a mouse around and typing on a keyboard.

Mabye next to your win/loss ratio they should have a little picture of a mouse or joystick, so when people go to laugh at your score, they can instead say "oh hey well thats not too bad for handicapping yourself with a joystick"

Joysticks.

Mechwarrior hard mode.

Mouse aiming might be easier but a good throttle with rudder flaps and a solid joystick gives so much more immersion - If i can combine that with TrackIR/TrackNoIR for HUD aiming then Im in heaven. Especially when I can use the below sticky.

I think a good joystick gaming rig would be cool. A good joystick should be pretty accurate too. I think the accuracy issue comes into play more with a game controller (like the Xbox360 controller). The thumb sicks are pretty hard to use accuratly without some sort of snap-to auto aim.

More then likely though, I will be using the mouse the whole time I play the game.

I'm old enough to remember getting blisters from the Atari 2600 joystick when Space Invaders came out. Left-Right-Fire...Nuff said.
I'll start with mouse / kb and get a feel for the game...then decide if a joystick will make it more "fun" for me. (as thontor hinted at above)
Plus I can use the joystick for PowerPoint presentations at work...who needs a wimpy presenter clicker when you have FIRE BUTTONS!

A mouse is superior to a joystick for control if the game is designed with a sensative cursor that works best with a mouse. I've also played games where a mouse sucked and the joystick was much more competitive, such as IL-2 Sturmovik. If the game doesn't let you just whip the cursor around and shoot what you click but instead requires keeping a cursor steady and turning into a shot then the joystick will work better. I haven't played MWO but hope it will work more like a flight simulator than a clicky shooty game. I think a joystick would be more fun regardless but if the mouse gives a huge advantage then I most likely would just use the mouse because I don't want to feel like i am at a huge disadvantage.

IIRC the mechwarrior didn't use the joystick to aim really, it was more mind-controlled via the neurohelmet (perhaps a little eye-tracking thrown in for good measure?), but i may be completely wrong. For me, a joystick would be much less immersive than a mouse, because my eye-hand-coordination works that way -> ergo neurohelmet.

..plus joystick sucks for anything other than flight sims. Perhaps i'd use it for a LAM... :)

I just don't get it... i always played Mechwarrior with a Joystick and never noticed any difference between my accuracy and that of a known mouse player. It all comes down to what you are used to.

That top joystick is sexy art sir.

I just ordered this sucker, should arive in a few days. Not nearly as high end as yours, but affordable and good reviews all around, also has hotas.

Pretty much immersion, and - in theory - better piloting. Mouse wins for aiming, joystick / throttle might be better for actual maneuvering, though that is yet to be seen.

But, as has been said, playing a Mechwarrior game without a Joystick is... just, wrong... somehow...

I've had this thing for years.. this is what I choose to handicap myself with:

sad i know

but i'm poor :(

Honestly though, as much as it it feels wrong to use a mouse, I'll probably try both ways and see if the mouse precision outweighs the "precision 2" immersion factor

I got an X52 Pro and love it, Im even grabbing a set of pedals shortly to round out the setup. I cant imagine playing a mech game without a joysitck. Even Mech 2 i was playing on an old ch products fighter sticker.

i would love to be able to play this game with a mouse and keyboard but the controls for that in mechwarrior 4 were horrible so i had to use a joystick there

waiting to see what the control sceme is here but i'm pretty sure it will have to be a joystick to accomodate torso twisting and all that. hope i'm wrong

The sick thing is, I picked up the barely used top one on EBay for 99 cents. I giggled like a school girl when I saw the bid win. It turns out the shipping cost more than the controller.

This will not be a twitch friendly game.

Just an educated guess.

look at all the elitist quake/counterstrike/cod snobs thinking they know what's best just cuz they can wrist flick like nobody's business. here's some bad news for you wannabe pwners: so can I, and wrist flicking is irrelevant in this game. you wouldn't fly a combat plane with a mouse would you? same reasons apply, just with one less maneuvering axis.
