Currently on a i5-4590T 2ghz (3 turbo) with a 2gb GTX 860 8 gigs ddr3 ram. Usually get around 50 fps, give or take.

Looking at getting an i7-6700 3.6ghz (4 turbo) and pairing it with a GTX 960. Do any of you mechwarriors out there have this combination? If so what can I expect? I only really play MWO and a handful of other games that aren't nearly as CPU dependent.

Get the i7-6700k version, which you will be able to OC, if not now then at a later date. That Turbo to 4.0ghz is a temp OC and is applied only to one core and not all cores.

I know the K is unlocked, also considering that. But I'm wondering how much of performance gain is to be found here, seeing that MWO eats CPU's. Is the 3.6ghz enough or do people find themselves OC'n more to get higher FPS on max settings in MWO?

When I left, I realized I had not answered your question.

I am currently running i5-3570k 3.4ghz OC to 4.5ghz, 16gigs ram. The CPU sweet spot started at 4.2ghz for me. GPU is a AMD HD 7950. base 850Mhz gpu OC 925Mhz/ 1250Mhz memory w/3gigs GDDR5 memory.

Without FPS cap low approx 55fps to a max 140fps, running med game settings w/cap 75fps. Had antialiasing off but turned on MSAA for some runs. The high/low yo-yo effect is noticeable for me, which gives me a headache :(

Others will eventually chime in but the ability to get more out of the CPU to make the game play smoother is worth it. Not OC lows hit 40fps to a high of 100fps with averages of around 50-55fps.

As for the Nvidia card, is your current system a laptop then since it is using a GTX 860m?

Also your current CPU is fine, you should look into a GTX 1060/1070 they are noticeably better than a 900 series card

the "K" model intel cpu for an MWO specced rig is almost a must if your building. i simple OC to 4ghz coupled with your 960 you will be able to run MWO on mx settings with absolutely no issues what so ever. my 3970k OC to 4ghz runs np with air cooling.

Is MWO the only game you play? No need to go Skylake if you aren't playing other AAA titles or looking to get into 4K gaming next year.

Is it a Laptop or Desktop? "T" Suffix=Power Optimised Lifestyle=Uses Less Watts/Lower TDP, Suited for a Laptop & the GTX 8xx Series was Mobile only (No Desktop GTX 8xx Cards), I'm guessing by GTX 860 you're talking about the GTX 860m, Those 2 things makes me think the OP Got a Laptop & Therefore It would Be Really hard if not Impossible to Upgrade, You'd Need a Whole New PC (Desktop, Not Laptop) if you want a I7-6700 & GTX 960:

Using an Alienware alpha I got as a gift a while ago. It does have a suped up 860M in it. Runs MWO decently at almost all max settings at 1080p. But anyway, looking to put together a separate system that I can also use for video editing and save the alpha for traveling as its one tiny machine and travels easier than my laptop.

Mainly interested what kind of CPU's people are using here, and if 3.4ghz is enough for MWO (as I've seen a lot of people over 4ghz for MWO), and how much over clocking they've done on it. Hoping not to spend over 1k,

i5 3570K @ 4.2GHz @ NoctuaDH14
NV 1070GTX
FPS : from 45-120 (yeah, it dips that much, even with a CPU clock beyond 4GHz ... )

So you are looking to build a desktop? If so just give us a price range.

He did - "Hoping not to spend over 1k" - which will be quite feasible.

I would go with something similar to this http://pcpartpicker.com/list/LWmq3F .It currently excludes a GPU because well there isn't any 1060s to buy atm.
