Witcher 3 is better than any of the OP's list, in over all category.

I do love my Medieval 2: Total War, like no other.

People will, of course, never agree on lists like this. It's in the nature of the beast. However, I think perhaps many also confuse "Best (video) games ever made" with "most important games ever made" or something along those lines, particularly when people start including older games.

Let's take a game like Karate Champ from 1984. It pretty much is the game credited with inventing the 1 on 1 fighting game/beat-em-up genre and many might include that (or early refinements of it like Way of the Exploding Fist or International Karate +) on a best games list, but do they actually belong there or more on an "important games" list for pretty much creating and establishing a genre? Is Nethack, already mentioned by several, actually among the _best_ games compared to newer Roguelikes, or should it rather be considered "important"?

I'm afraid many of us old geezers who played our first "vidya games" on when we came across a Space Invaders arcade cabinet in our kiddie-years and grew up in the age of the Commodore 64 and the like tend to give old games more credit than they are due for being "good" when they should rather be considered "important" for what they did to help establish the video games industry and various genres within it.

And I say this as someone who looks at the C64 era With decidedly rose-tinted spectacles. :D

If you like wacky stuff and hard challenges on M2:TW, try my Mongolphobia mod, something I made many years ago. Oh, and if you see the Papacy army has Seraphim unit, do be careful. Posted Image

Impossible to make such a list.

Pretty disappointed that nobody mentioned:

- Syndicate
- System Shock 2
- Warcraft 2

yet. I guess most people can agree on The Witcher 3. But no way in hell MWO belongs on this list, neither as a shooter, nor a Battletech game.

The 99% of the population of players who left this game would disagree with the OP

Most feel almost all the other MW titles are better than this one

1. Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries
2. System Shock 2
3. Digital Combat Simulator
4. Might and Magic II
5. F29 Retaliator
6. X-wing
7. Goldeneye (N64)
8. Syndicate
9. Starcraft
10. Ghost Recon (XBox)

I put the two console games in there because I never played the PC version of GR and I don't know if Goldeneye was ever ported over. I know there are some I missed, and the order on these isn't necessarily set, but these are the ten that came to mind.

ETA: To clarify, these are top ten video games for me. As for games in general...

These tabletop games beat any of the above:
1. Battletech
2. Axis and Allies
3. Battlestar Galactica
4. Shadow Hunters

If you're going to label your list "Ever Made", then you'd better damn well ensure that the list includes more iconic games from a wider breadth of history. Your list is more of a "top ten made in the past five or so years".

If you want a true top-ten EVER made, then I believe it would look more like this (In no particular order) (and I'll even keep it PC-only here):
  • Nethack
  • Half-Life 2
  • Doom (no, not the 2016 remake. I mean DOOM)
  • Counter-Strike
  • Bioshock
  • Starcraft
  • Homeworld
  • Portal 2
  • Unreal Tournament 2004
  • Quake
And that's just me shooting from the hip.

I think you should have System Shock there instead of Bioshock :) ... System shock was the first and in my opinion, the best, of the bunch.

I think everyone's list is biased towards the games they have played and the kinds of games they like to play. RPGs/FPS/RTS/Turn based ... and on :)

Here are some of my picks ...

- Rogue/Nethack
- DikuMUDs .. though there were lots of different flavours
- System Shock
- Everquest
- Mechwarrior 2,3,4
- Civilization franchise
- Warcraft franchise (not WOW) ... Starcraft grew out of it
- Baldurs Gate series
- Fallout 4: New Vegas (though most of the Fallout franchise are good)
- Witcher series though I have only recently started playing them
- DOOM/Quake
- COD/Battlefield
- probably some sports games I never play :)

MWO doesn't make my top ten list because there simply isn't enough GAME in my opinion for something in the Mechwarrior franchise. If it only ever aspired to be an FPS like multi-player DOOM in mechs then it has pretty much achieved that goal. If that is all this game will ever be then maybe it can squeak onto a top 10 of team based FPS PVP games if only because the list is relatively short to start with (though Doom/Quake/COD/Battlefield all do this genre better than MWO). ... but it would never make any sort of "overall" top 10 list.

However, my impression based on the comments from PGI over the years was that MWO was to be much more than it currently is, with more involved gameplay, role warfare, factions, and many other elements to make the basic mech combat gameplay more fun, interesting, involving, immersive and attractive. It hasn't achieved this goal. Maybe it never will.

Influencial is as valid here as "the ones I like best" which is what basically every list is.

In Nethack's particular case, I stand firm. Not because it was influential - Rogue gets credit there.

Nethack is one of very few games ever to have that level of depth, interaction between objects. There's practically nothing else like it and that's a shame. Lots of great Roguelike games; even better in terms of purely roguelikes... But nothing else has come close to Nethack for depth.

  • TES: Morrowind
  • Total War Shogun 2
  • Starcraft 2

  • Disgaea 1
Everyones a masterpiece in my book. The top three are always installed and played regularly since their respective release. The rest are games I have played multiple times with each having a playtime far over 200 hours and could play them at any time without feeling bored.

In no particular order because I'll change my mind about it anyway:
Deus Ex
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Resident Evil 4
Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
Unreal
Super Mario World
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Dawn of War II
Final Fantasy VIII
Heroes of Might and Magic III

Quite a diverse list, notice which game isn't on it.
I'm hoping I can add Battletech, Dawn of War III and Star Citizen to the list at some point.
