Like what Eve, and now other games, have where you can buy in items and sell them for in game currency. How about doing this for all pay items and slots etc so people can gain the items for various means. This obviously means items availability is distrubuted throughout the game community and allows in game buys with in game currency that otherwise would not happen. While others can buy the items with RL money and sell it for needed cash. One of the nicer setups for pay games or any games with needed currency transaction. This could also allow sales of items that give things like slots or sub days etc that could be sold on an ingame market for players to buy. And as it is a buy in system someone pays for it originally so money is made. And possibly in new places. plus people can buy and sell in a market fashion and wait for prices to rise and fall to sell mechs and etc to make extra money. (stock market realities)

Any downsides to this for this game?

BTW it could be called an arms market. Or a blackmarket... Or if there is an arms market there could be a blackmarket that allows sales for the currency that is bought with RL money for the same reason. But with the same logic, the currency must be bought into the game to be in the market. (maybe good for selling colectors items that are harder to get.(

Also, separate, or on top of this, the idea of always being able to earn something and having all pay items optional but there for whoever wishes to take a shortcut is always a good game design. It makes the richest environment and the best communities and gameplay. If you combine them you have alot of stuff for people to do and lots of room to add to the game.
