So I have been reading the Sarna wiki a little to help me choose a faction, and it creates more questions than it answers. For instance, at first I was thinking Free Worlds League, because it is supposed to be the capitalist, individual liberty American Libertarian type faction, then I find out its like a fascist dictatorship ruled by a monarch?! Well, ok, how about the Davions, I always disliked them because they seemed like dorky do gooders, but whatever, at least they seem to be a UK style Constitutional monarchy/Liberal democracy, oh wait, they are a monarchy ruled dictatorship too?
And forget about those totalitarian communistic Clans, they can burn in hell, along with all things Kerensky....
-Doesn't like the FWL.
-Doesn't like the Combine.
-Doesn't like the FedSuns.
-Hates the Clans.
Have you considered signing up with the Lyran Commonwealth? They've got an Estates General assembly so the absolutism is a little easier to swallow.

They are, but they're still going to be about as representative as you'll get in the 3048/49. And you don't have to like the FedSuns to work with them.

Nah...cmon! The Inner Sphere has some good mechs. Yeah i'm a clanner, but i would also pilot some the "captured" IS chassis. I really like the old and legendary SLDF mechs, but i hate their later "wannabe" Omni's.

Got on AOL to see about the halfassed MW2 multiplayer and found..the Registry. Role Playing BTech group using MW2's so called multiplayer to fight the occasional combat with. Spent a month hanging around, chatting with the various people and ended up joining Clan Mongoose..yes..the Not Named Clan..because..quite simply, the Khan and his wife were just too damn much fun to not be hooked up with. So I became that most hated of things, a Clan Trueborn MechWarrior..in a role playing league..fun times. Learning about the Clans, something I'd actively AVOIDED while playing TT, was interesting, a LOT more backstory and depth in them then I'd realized. I started to RP it..no more contractions in my 'speech', no vulgarity at all, always being polite even while telling someone to ****** off and please die in a fire. We had no Loremaster in the Clan,so me and Ephraim decided to take up the post, and learned all we could about the Clans and the history of the Inner Sphere up to the Exodus. We had a blast, it was a great time, and we'd occasionally get to jump into a Mech and blast someone to pieces.
I've been in various groups since then, helped to create then run a league even. RPed the entire time, had fun with it, as a Clan Trueborn MechWarrior and Loremaster, even when I joined Shadow Rat's Marauders, a pirate group, I was STILL Kristov Kerensky, Bloodnamed Trueborn MechWarrior and Loremaster, I'd just been taken Bondsman and worked my way up to XO
Look at the PEOPLE who are playing the various factions, mercs, pirates, whatever they call themselves. Find people you enjoy talking with, you have fun fighting alongside, and join them. It's the best way to have fun

So what is the deal, is every power in the BT universe some kind of generic totalitarian Monarchy? It seems like if humanity was scattered across thousands of star systems that centralized power would be much more difficult and more unlikely, with Politics being more like the Italian city states during the Renaissance, (planet states?) but apparently these vast distances, and the resulting difficulties in communications and logistics, have resulted in a new golden age of empires and kings?
The deal is this-in galaxy spaning empires monarchies work better than representative republics or simple majorities due to diverse culture(worlds) and distance. HGP uplinks can keep you connected well enough but the prince/archon/coordinator cannot be everywhere and neither can his main forces. so you nobles who swear oaths of loyalties and serve in the monarchs name and enforcing house law. the model was used extensively in england. william the conqueror kept the fuedal system in check by modifying it into major lordships held by tenant-in-chiefs. the lands forming the lords endowment was collectively known as "his honor" or more precisely that which gives a man distiction. the battletech uiniverse follows a similar vains with planetary rulers of the nobility. the planet is their lands and castle and can be held and administered locally with the weight of the king and his armies at the beckon call.
Some fo the smaller periphery systems make other forms of government work, but they are small enough to keep all their worlds constantly in play as far as representation goes.
the marian hegemony is imperial roman, the outworld alliance uses a parlimentary system etc....

As someone who had a bit bad conversation with you, I am not in position to suggest you something (if you are in fact that Alaskan Viking I remember), but probably staying as a mercenary would be the best for you. Nobody will rule you (since all the houses are dictatorships) and you will have freedom to choose where to serve, you will get pretty good mechs and as long as you will not sign with Kuritans, you will be fine. Maybe we will even fight side by side once.
