This was an idea that came to me a while ago. Many people like customising/designing mechs and a number have posted their ideas here in various threads. It seems to me that if PGI thought it a good idea they could, once a month, or whatever hold a competition to either design a completely new mech or come up with a variant on an existing mech. The brief could be detailed or sparse. ie Optimise the Shadow Hawk as a recon mech/recon lance command mech IS 3049 tech levels only. Perhaps the prize would be a copy of the mech in game. They could even make a small charge for entries.

Could be a nifty PR initiative every time a month or so before they launch a new expansion. Because it would surely revitalize the community at that point some. :)

I'd rather just play the game.

Design a custom configuration for an existing 'Mech? No way, anybody can do that.

Completely new, from scratch, complete with artwork and full flavor text? That'd be awesome. Although the standards for "artwork" would have to be really lax otherwise the competition would belong to those of us in the community who are already artists. (Although, I'd be annoyed if I spent a few hours making artwork for a design only to have it beaten by a stick figure.)

What Caveman said.

Designing a new loadout is about as yawn inducing as can be. New artwork and it gets more interesting.

Something I could get interested in...
Here's an old one, I can do better now, but still it would be fun to make a new mech. Art, background, and loadout.

I'm not real keen on it, personally. If they do, it should be a rare thing.

I'd be down for a new chassis competition once in awhile complete with art. I wouldn't be making any promises about it getting into the game though. Maybe just some in game currency as reward.
