IMPORTANT: Due to recent changes in how PGI will be handling canon merc units, we will be changing our unit name. Please stay tuned to the forums for announcements regarding this issue.

EDIT: We are currently in the process of voting on a new unit name. We expect this process to take around two weeks. In the meantime, we are still recruiting!

A Northwind Highlander stands proud as a special breed of soldier. Steeped in ancient tradition and history few could match, a Highland commission would be a point of pride for many in the Inner Sphere. To a citizen of Northwind, it might very well be the next best thing to destiny.

Destiny, honor, and tradition aside, it's more than any of that. It's one of those few compulsions for which there are no adequate words to articulate the drive. It's beyond difficult to put into words. It's something you can never understand unless you've felt it. The will to act in defense of your children, your family, your home.

As if that special blend of fanatical nationalistic pride wasn't enough to separate you from 'all the other soldiers', you have the most intoxicating form of pride in ego. You are among the most highly trained, highly skilled warriors in the known universe. You're not only frequent to the superior side of tactical planning and execution, but you fully utilize failure as an opportunity to root out weakness and eliminate its taint from future equations.

Finally, you have a deep resentment for meddlesome houses and their machiavellian intrigues that often lead to the bloodshed of 'disposable' men and women unfortunate enough to find themselves enlisted as pawns in their grand game of princes... yourself included.

If nothing else, at least you're getting paid, and you can choose a side. But even so, your mercenary lifestyle is the price you have chosen to pay to ensure Northwind remains free from oppression and tyranny. Your choice to protect Northwind from her enemies is what makes Northwind your home.

Aut pax aut bellum! Through peace or war;

I am a Highlander, I serve Northwind.

~Tyr Gunn

What you need to know:

The Northwind Highlanders Council is an elected board that makes all leadership decisions for our unit. Feel free to approach any member of the Council at any time. The Council consists of:

Colonel Kiel Randor
Colonel Tyr Gunn
Colonel Max O'Connor (Callsign: Irish)
Colonel Kevin Gibson (Callsign: Wulver)
Colonel Korbyn McColl (Callsign: Devil Man)

The unit itself is made up of players of all experience levels and from all walks of life. We have seasoned veterans who've played every BattleTech/MechWarrior title ever released since the first tabletop game came out in the early 80s and we have members who had never even heard of a battlemech until they found this website. Whatever your experience or your play style, you will find a home in Northwind Highlanders.

New recruits begin their journey in our training regiment, the 1st Kearny Highlanders. After proving they have a basic understanding of mech handling and small unit tactics they are then transferred to their regiment of choice. Our four regiments are:

1st Kearny Highlanders:

Led by Colonel Gunn, the 1st Kearny is our training regiment. Full time members of the 1st are our instructors and trainers. They will teach you what you need to know to be successful as a mechwarrior.

2nd Kearny Highlanders:

A role-playing regiment led by Colonel O'Connor, the 2nd has a rich history. If you enjoy role-playing, the 2nd may be the perfect home for you!

MacLeod's Regiment:

Led by Colonel McColl, MacLeod's is a "just have fun" style regiment. Members may opt to role-play if they wish, but it is not required and most members of MacLeod's do not actively rp.

Stirling's Fusiliers:

Stirling's is a role-playing regiment led by Colonel Gibson, but it is more than just that. The Fusiliers follow strict military protocol while on a drop. Although it is not a requirement, many members of Stirling's are ex-military IRL and will act that way when you face them in battle. Be prepared to hurt.

Irregardless of the regiment you opt to join, we will never judge our members on their win/loss ratio or kill counts. Although we want to win as much as any other unit out there, we are more concerned that our members know how to follow orders from their operational commander while on a drop and have fun at the same time.

So if we sound like the right outfit for you, strap on your kilt and come join us at http://www.northwindhighlanders.net.

Oh...and I've been asked to mention that we have cookies, punch and pie...not to mention scotch, Guinness and haggis, obviously...

Excellent! We can use this thread to start putting things together. We're gonna need a leader (I won't have the time), so if anyone's been leading an NWH someplace lately, speak up! While we're on the topic, what's your MW experience?

I started playing NetMech 95 on Kali in both GC and M3L. My first unit was House Liao on M3L. A few of us went and formed Northwind Highlanders there under DanO sometime in '97. My wife eventually look over leading us there (callsign Lady Death) and with the help of Batcat/Condor we built up to around 40 or so members. We left NWH then and joined House Kurita to repay them for their help in training us (lag shooting was so much fun to learn). When M3L fell apart we went to GC, where we joined Clan Wolverine for awhile before forming Clan Ghost Bear. But, eventually, we made our way back to NWH on Starleague (MW3). We stopped playing sometime in 2000, when we started playing EQ, though I did buy every MW related game that came out between now and then and enjoyed them all (even MechAssault).

Of course, I played the Battletech board game long before then.

So, what's your background?

Hmm, Think we had a Lady Death in our unit for a bit back when we were playing MW3 on MSN's "the Zone" back around 99. Also seem to recall she had a husband that played for GBL, who she left us to join him. What was your callsign?

I went by Kiel Randor back then. Guess I still do really. Me and my brother ran NWH in MW3 for about 2 years and transitioned to MW4 with about 80 pilots in the roster at our peak. We really liked the aspects of the units history and military protocol and so really tried to run it as a Military unit which earned us a reputation among our various leagues as a professional and honourable unit to play with or against. We did a some work with Minnesota Tribe and worked with ELH and GDL on the MBC for a couple leagues. We came up with a few unique unit traditions that alot of other Units soon started to emulate. Saluting Senior Officers in the game lobby, even on the opposing team. Recruiting Interviews, basic training and pledges of allegiance. All seems pretty dorky and basic now, but at the time they added a bit more flavour to the game we all seemed to love.

Rampant cheating and horrible lag issues in MW4 plus a few league inactivity issues ultimately killed us by mid 2002. But it was a a sad demise. Lost track of alot of good guys.

Popped up here and there in a few other spots along the way. The shortlived 3025 did a few drops with another unit of Highlanders that carried the name after we did. But never really had the time or interest in starting back up again after that.

Still I'd Love to have a place to parade around in the old Kilt once again. Rolling across a battlefield with a few old farts that just love to have fun.

That would have been my wife. She did play in NWH in "The Zone" around that time and I did play in GBL for a bit, though I spent more time on NWH in SL. My callsign was Devil Man most of the time, but I think I used Corpsetearer in GBL. I do remember you and your brother. Always thought you guys did a really good job with that stuff!

I always enjoyed the history of NWH as well (still have my NWH sourcebook lying around here somewhere), but never did get into the RP aspect. Gonna be fun putting on the Kilt and strapping into a heavy mech again, though! Looking forward to guilding with you guys! =)

Greetings!

Nice to see some interest in NWH and some familiar faces. I played as Ladydeath on Kali and TKZ. My husband, Devilman, summed up our history with NetMech already. Looking forward to playing this game when it launches.

At this point, if you're interested, you're in, as far as I'm concerned. I just created a Facebook page for us:

http://www.facebook....212992222106432

I think once we get 25 Likes the name will be locked. We can work out more details there.

Please count me in. Past clanner (CL_LOKI) with Clan Cloud Cobra in MW3. Kinda got away from the game for a while as it fizzled out, but am D@MN happy to see a revival!

I was a "clutch" player for my clan, slugging it out when it counted and fairly comfortable in just about any chassis which came in very handy as too many of our lads and lassies were single mod specialists.

Ill sign.

I've mainly played the Tabletop game of old; I can fill roles others don't want until I'm more experienced.
Oh, lots of Starsiege experience though. ;)

I've got some definite interest in getting the Highlanders represented in game. Not much organized mech work done, but I've been playing the games extensively since MW2. Tabletop and RPG just with my buddies too.

I was part of NWH in several online leagues and even ran the unit in one of those leagues.
I went by Spectre in the Grand Council, MW3 league and in BT3025.

If no one else steps up to the job of leading us I'll do it, at least until someone else feels they can do the job better, or we hold some type of elections.

I'm feeling a stirring... a stirring in my soul.
It's deep down inside, where secret dreams hide.
It's a dream of the Highlands, the long grass swaying in the breeze.
The ocean crashing across the rocky shoals, the Reaper beside me exuding Cold.

The North winds blow, the Highlands at peace.
But times change, the 'Verse turns, the Houses call upon us again.

Highlanders hear the bag pipes cry! How many of them can we make die!

Now that's out of the way... I'd just like to say I'd love to wear me kilt again, if the Northwind Highlanders will have me. Haven't been jocking any lately, been a couple of years if I recall correctly. However my experience started way back in the day of the Clan Wars and Mercenaries in MechWarrior 2. Moved from there to a few passings in MW3, spent a whole HELL of a lot of time playing Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries. Gonna have to ransack my brain for a few tidbits about the ol' chassis.

FYI: That first little tidbit is original from me ;) Well, 'cept for that little part I took from The March.

Nuuan, you're the only one to step up so far. I'm sure a lot of folks are like me and simply don't have the time to lead a unit right now. Let's at least get you set up as an admin for now.

If you'll join the FB page and post there letting me know who you are, I'll make you an admin.

To everyone else: **** good to see so much interest in NWH. I do see some callsigns that look familiar, but it's been more than a decade since I've played. Looking forward to dropping with you!

Lads and Lasses,

Tis good ta see so many Highlanders from so many eras coming together to rebuild the glory and tradition that embodies the Highland warriors of Northwind. Ours is a great history. Spanning thousands of years of Military History from starving peasants throwing off the shackles of tyranny to Professional Elite cadres of Soldiers defending innocents from the horrors of war, We have always served with distinction and honour.

It will be good to see that tradition carry on.
