I would love to see these implemented. Add's a lot to the gameplay.
I personally don't think they were balanced all that well in the mech packs (They could practically fly, video below) but I think if implemented correctly it would give scout mechs a huge boost, not to mention a whole new fun-factor. They could make it so directional jump jets have to be slotted, and you would need a certain amount based on the weight of the mech as well as have them placed correctly based off the angle of the jump your trying to do. (Jump left, you'd need directional JJ's placed on the right arm/torso, etc etc.)
What do ya guys think?

Would be interesting to have a little bit of maneuverability on jump jets. Keep you from slamming into things

Nope, not for me. If you want jets like that, try Hawken.

I could have sworn at some point a long time ago they said that they wanted to add this in, but maybe I'm just not remembering it correctly. Hopefully someone can find a definite answer somewhere.

That would be a great feature. I think they had that in Mechwarrior 2. Really add some depth.

As PGI is trying to stick close to TT lets take a page of JJs from TT.
With JJs you fly from hex A to hex B in a straight line. If interposing terrain's elevation is greater than your number of JJs you cannot make the jump. You are not allowed to fly around the object into other hexes to get from A to B. You are allowed to face any direction when you arrive in hex B.
So in my opinion that is what JJs should do in MWO too.

In simpler terms: you can jump backwards, forwards or sideways, and turn in mid air.
I totally agree with this. We have had it in previous games (MW2 at least, think we also had it in MW3), and it fits both the rules and the fluff as laid out by the TT (some 'Mechs have been stated to have jump jets specifically to give them more maneuverability). Also, I imagine the Spider won't be nearly as good if it can only jump forwards.

Actually, the same suggestion/request was made/discussed just over a month ago (as well as at other times before that).
Though, to be fair to the OP, the above-linked post referred to the idea as "relaxed Jump Jets", so the search function and/or Google-fu wouldn't have been quite as straightforward as it normally would be...

i think you can do forwards and backwards in this game but only by walking that way first

Maybe make everyone happy... Allow directional jump-jets, but only on light mechs. It would make them more useful/playable in a "scout" role, but also keep in line with their ability to maneuver better against the Heavies/Assaults. After all, what good is all that speed and maneuverability, if as soon as you hit your jump jets, you're a "sitting duck" (technically, a "flying duck", LoL) where all your opponenents know exactly what direction you are going and blast you from the sky.

I think if we got directional jumpjets, all 'Mechs should have them. the catch is they wouldn't be that useful on the heavier chassis. As an example, a Jenner or (especially a Spider) has enough thrust to jump from a forward run and be going in reverse before the jump jets are spent (though lateral movements are likely to me of more use) while a catapult can only hope to reduce its forward velocity slightly (again, it can shift to the side, but not by a whole lot).
The thrust available should be proportional to the number of jump jets as well much the same as total jump height/distance.

Evasive maneuvers anyone? The instructions in MW2 actually encourage lateral jumping for missile dodging. And it worked.
Addon: what JJ's aren't slotted? Are they supposed to be?
