I am a newby in regards to the mech warrior world.. If you had to defend your base against lights, which mech would you choose? And the reason for your choice...

Just looking to understand some of the tactics of the game..

Thanks for any information shared..

A Dragon, or a K2.

Something fast with almost no armor, but good firepower. From the roaster in beta, prolly a Dragon.

Reasoning behind is that they won't try to kill you, only harass you, therefor you only need speed to match them and not very much in terms of armor. And teh firepower is needed to shut them down, some missiles should work the best, I think.

A Jenner would be the best scout killer. But if its a Jenner your going up against then something with slightly more armor and at least as good of firepower I could see light mechs being a real thorn in the side if they decide to harrass you and capture your base.

Am I defending the base by myself or with a team? If I have somebody to cover my back, I'd go with an Assault class. Otherwise I'd need a competent medium or heavy good at short to medium range (where lights have the speed advantage for circle fighting)

If you can 'stand on the point' then a reasonably manoeuvrable medium would work. The Centurion would probably do the job; enough armour to have some staying power, enough firepower to take down a light fairly quickly, and some speed and handling to keep the lights from being able to do runaround attacks.

I would just go assault, because there probably already is some form of static defense on the base. So using those to my advantage I would position myself to keep them from circling me and come in with a array of close assault weapons. If I can't hold them still merely push them over, then blow them up.

From what i read so far an assault might have trouble targeting/tracking the lights.
A Hunchback sounds pretty good for that job though.
If the pilot is a good shot with the AC/20,taking out some light shouldnt be too hard.

True
I've found the ballistic weapons a better fit for guard duty since a light tends to crowd your heavy. A well-placed AC shot will send them scurrying.

That's true but the only way they could pose that problem is if:

1. They have enough room.
2. You allow them to have the room to maneuver.
3. You forget to push them to the ground.

Problems lights will have with bases, is it's a base. Easily captured if no one is there, but guarded they have to make room. My idea of a base is a closed in area. Closed in areas and lights don't usually mix. All you have to do is scoot your assault mechs back against a wall, there's not really much they can do at that point. If they get to close just ram them with your mech.

I would build my defense around a lance of Atlas, Stalker, Awesome and Catapult K2 as the "anvil". For the "hammer", i would go with the Centurion, Trebuchet, Hunchback and (Grand) Dragon. For the cavalry unit, I would include the Cicada (2), Spider and Jenner. Since the foe MUST attack the base, this will to some extent limit where they can manuver. The cavalry unit will be used to fix /limit the enemy 's position. The Hammer unit to pound them as they approach. The anvil unit has long range weapons to pound the enemy as they approach the basse along lines forced on them by the other 2 units. By using a variation of the "Thatch Weave", the anvil mechs can provide their own rear cover when the enemy closes as they must to win. This allows the hammer and cavalry lances to bring maximum force to bear on the oppostion. Terrain will be of great importance in such a battle.

I would suggest any mech with full arm movement and laser slots in those arms. With independant arm tracking you should be able to keep up with a fast mover. Torso twist speed would be a big factor as well.

General tactic for a light mech would be circle straffing (circle of death) around you. Counter would be reverse movement on your mech and turning in the opposite direction of the light, allowing you to wait for the light to come into your reticle rather than chasing them. Lasers would be the most effective due their damage over time. If you miss with a direct fire weapon like an lbx, it will cost you in reload time and re aim time. Streak srms would also be effective assuming there are few obstacles present.
