Wow, there's a dropship in one of the poll options, and poll doesn't go "lol lets start with Overlord"? The most adequate forum i've ever been to. *changes vote to light*
Also, isn't it pointless? Devs still didn't say how the game will be starting.

I'm pretty sure when we start out in the game we'll have one of every 'mech class, or they'll let us choose what we start in, so we don't have to work so hard to get what we want.. That and it's It's just stupid to not let us choose. Starting us out in a light would just be ridiculous because then Mr. 30-Ton-Pockets with his atlas could just blow our heads off with his rockets...

ALSO: Don't confuse the Steiners by saying there are weight classes that aren't assault.

The Lyrans developed the Zeus as their scouting mech. I rest my case.

We respect you Battle Armor pilots, don't worry. It takes great fortitude to stride into battle with nothing but a prayer and a pop gun.

Running a -4P Hunchback in my TT mercenary campaign right now; so many lasers.

I anticipate that vast lands are to be claimed at the start of MWO, hence we need something a little lighter than assult, possibly ~75 tonnes. This would enable us to claim the ground quicker and still have enough firepower to defend and expand. I would use Nova Cat of some varient if it is availible, but most likely we would use Thanatos.

SSSSH! Don't let those Steiners find out that there are mechs other than assault! They might then progress to the use of tactics and combined arms!

Combined arms ? You either fire the LRMs or all the short range stuff from an Atlas, doing both is stupid usualy. Davions and their strange ideas........

Neither the NovaCat nor the Thanatos will be available in 3049...

So we have to find an existing Mech to start with...

Ah well, ATLAS it is. I was reading somewhere that there is going to be many systems to be claimed except each house will have 'safe-house' systems. I personally think systems close to but not in the inner inner-shpere will be the most valueable as they are shielded from the periphery clans and not too-hotly contested compared to the central systems.

I personally think that a light mech tho cheap requires more skill to fly than a noobie has while an assault class mech is too valuable to waste on a noob. start the players in a cheap medium and make him prove himself there so he is usefull and make him advance to light or heavy.

My friend, you have much to learn about House Steiner. The Lyran Commonwealth excels at placing noobs within Assault Mechs.

The reasons for this are threefold:

1) Survivability. Unlike other empires, we in the Lyran Commonwealth value our soldiers. They are our collective sons and daughters, and they are far less expendable than some hunk of metal. We place our mechpilots in the mechs that we think will bring them home safely, and let them gain experience without undue risk of life and limb.

2) Non-Aggression. The Lyran Commonwealth is more concerned with keeping its borders safe than with territorial expansion. We have a defensive combat doctrine, centered around guarding our many industrialized worlds. To that end, an Assault Mech is the finest choice for area denial. Should the situation grow more dire, they are nightmares to face in urban combat. They mesh very well with our objectives.

3) Excessive wealth. The fact is, the Lyran Commonwealth is filthy rich. Everything we touch turns shiny and valuable. What's a House to do with all this wealth? Well, build exotic ice castles on frozen worlds, of course! But after we built a sufficient number of Bond villain igloo palaces, it seemed the next best thing would be to spend it on giant robo-men, so that we could have massive, real-life Rock 'Em Sock 'Em free-for-alls. And, um, defend ourselves.
