However, having a 56k modem (UK based) translated to max lag!
My favourite mech was the Jenner.
I ended up playing for the FPG (Free Pilot Guild).
I enjoyed the Lance fights.
The Jenner and I would be sent out to either the left flank or the right. The big Mechs would slug it out and I'd move in from the flank while they were occupied.
Great fun.

MW2 and Mercs - Practically lived online playing it.
MW3 - This was about when I stopped playing competitively because I was focusing more on Xwing vs TIE Fighter and XWing Alliance. Though I was on the MSN Zone quite a bit
MW4 - Played a bit, but not enough to be competitive.
Mech Assault - Had it, played it a bit... not much of a console player
MechCommander - played the hell out of that too
On a side note: I played a lot of Heavy Gear online too.
I still have and use my preferred controller: a 1995 Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro (with the ultra rare Gameport to USB adapter)
The buttons are a little worn, but it works well enough for me in Battlefield 3 right now

My first Battletech-inspired games on the computer were with the Commodore Amiga. I had BattleTech: The Crescent Hawks' Inception but didn't play it too much. I also had a 2D hex-based game which seemed like it was a direct emulation of the table top version. I can't remember the name but think it might have just been called Battlemech. I remember the high-res graphics were pretty cool and the screen would flicker to run them.
After that, I picked up a copy of MW2 and loved it. I'd played lots of flight simulators but this was such a brand new environment and the speed of the game was more my style, allowing for some stealth and strategy.
I believe I skipped MW3, however. I played a little bit of Mechcommander but preferred the simulator environment.
When MW4 came out I totally cut my teeth on that and very quickly found the love for online play. We had a clan that piloted almost exclusively Shadowcats (though I reserved a Daishi for when I was in a bad mood and a Cougar or Raven for when I was on my own and just causing mayhem.) Our load outs were such that in some situations we could take out an assault mech in one strike (think multiple artillery flares illuminating campers.) We also did well on coordinated ground and air attacks where three or four of us could knock out an assault mech on a single pass when firing as a unit. Great tactics and great fun.
The Shadowcat in MW4 was the only mech that was that versatile. When MW Mercenaries came out., something changed with the load outs and I couldn't replicate the potency with any combinations. Also, most of the servers had limited ammo set on, which was no good if you wanted to use Long Toms or artillery as you'd fire once or twice and it'd be spent until someone killed you and you respawned.
After that, I basically went back to MW4 and picked up all the expansions in bargain bins, but the main servers had shut down and I couldn't get the Mektek versions to install. To make matters worse, when I tried new games like IL-2, I couldn't play them because years of Mechwarrior had cause my joystick to be permanently warped, from torso twisting and running spirals around big mechs.
So that's my history. Now I am waiting for this.

I remember my Dad and I going to a video rental place when I was younger and seeing the Mechwarrior title for the SNES. Upon playing it I was hooked from the start. I remmeber finally being able to afford buying a Raganrok after hours and hours of play time and I was thrilled by using this behemoth of a machine to rain death on anything I saw. I had friends who played the TT games but I was never hugely interested in them. I was just too young and didn't have the patience at the time I guess.
From there I remember seeing Mechwarrior2 when I got my first PC and Mech2 Mercenaries, then Mechwarrior3, and 4 and so on. I even watched a couple of televised Battletech tournaments I happened to run on to.
The one thing I was always wishing for, was for technology to catch up so we could have better detailed worlds and mechs to use. Now that MWO is almost here we finally have that really believable world and highly detailed mech models that more closely relate to the art work we've seen.
I'm not lucky enough to be in the beta yet but I've already got the old Logitech Freedom 2.4 joystick dusted off and tested incase I get that email and the pending box turns to approved
EDIT: typo

Truth be told I'm not sure how I feel about this game, but I do have hope.
My first online experiences were with Kali and MW2 bouncing from MS DOS windows to my little windows 95 box. I owned/ran a planetary conquest gaming league, which in its hay-day was the largest (depends on who you ask) planetary conquest gaming league in the world. Prior to running the league, I was a member in the Cranston's Snords Irregulars. I still have the website code that I put out on Geocities!
I fondly recall the days of running around in my 35 ton Jenner IIc with a cockpit headshot window the size of a school bus... putting the hurt down on mediums and heavies because my engine was so fast (and our 56k connections so slow), they could never find my "lag spot" to hit me.
You can find my name in the Mech Commander manual... I beta tested the game. Worked at the downtown Chicago FASA Interactive studio for that.
These days I follow the Mek Tek guys and their site.. but strictly as a reader. I don't play any BT/Mechwarrior games right now... it's been years since I've been impressed enough with one to play it for more than the time it takes to beat the single player game mode.
At any rate, great thread, OP. I signed up specifically to respond to it.
Hopefully this game does some justice to the series, and to Battletech as a whole.
GASP! Could it be Joker who ran the old ADL league? If so, you'll remember my Highlander. :-)

Had an old IBM PC that didn't even have a hard drive, played the original Mechwarrior on that baby.. loved that Battlemaster..
Got the MW2 Titanium trilogy, included MW2, GBL and Mercs, ... That was my first online gaming experience... Netmech, Clan Rolling Thunder... made lots of friends there, had a good time.
Clan RT moved over to MW3, and played plenty of organized ladder matches over the MSN Zone, good times
Same with MW4/BK/Mercs... Online, multiplayer ladder... Clan RT...
And i've used the same name for all of it.. Thontor here, hi !

We played the hell out of that in the 80's
When net mech finally came out (MW2 early versions) I had waited for almost a decade for another decent Battletech title.
I never expected to have to wait a decade again, but then MW4 happened....

First time I played a MW game online was MW4 and later Mercs, which I played for a few years after I found a good unit to join.
But when that game started getting outdated most of us moved on to other games and stopped playing MW.
Then came the MWLL total conversion mod for Crysis Wars, and I was very happy as there was a new MW game to play, and hoped our unit would start playing again.
But only a few of my unit even tried MWLL and they didnt play much, so my experience with MWLL is only random pub games, but still good experiences.
Now I'm looking forward to MWO, and I hope that the unit I once joined will be waking up from its slumber to once again carve out its place in the MW history.
