However, founders have all been given access to the closed beta, as part of the initial founders' package - guaranteed access to closed beta was one of the perks. However, that doesn't mean that you have to pay if you want to get in the closed beta; it means that if you pay you will get in the closed beta. It's not exactly the same thing, and it's not fair to them to equate the two.
Open beta is upcoming, when that time comes, you will have access. Until then, hang on... and don't pay for the founders' package unless you want to. While PGI would naturally prefer you to pay than not to pay if you're happy about it either way, they would also prefer you to play happily for free than to deal with refund demands from a dissatisfied customer. No company likes to deal with unhappy customers.
Lastly, as Kyphe mentioned, there are many others who have waited for far longer than you, and have chosen not to purchase the founders' package, and wait. You are not alone in this.

No.

It is. That select number includes anyone who is a founder, it also includes all the others who were selected by the random selection process (to which even staff are apparently not totally privy)

Nothing happened, we're still in closed beta and it's still free and the game is still free. You were never guaranteed a place in the closed beta, founders are guaranteed a place if they want to take advantage of it. Remember, its purpose, like the open beta, is testing, it's nothing else.

1. Server costs. Instead of running 10 servers for EVERYONE who wants to play the beta instead of say 2-3 for the founders pack people would make managing costs a lot easier. I don't think this is a HUGE reason to keep people out of the game but when they are only testing the game its nice to keep costs lower until its fully open to the public.
2. Bug management. Having the beta only open to a select few limits spammed bugs. Better only 100 people report an obvious bug than 10000 and so therefore wastes less player and developer time reading/writing out bug reports until it gets fixed. Its easier on the developers to fix the big bugs in the system now with only a few people and once most is cleared up open it up into an open beta for more in-depth testing.
3. Complaints. People complain. Why let people play a game still in testing and then get mad and stop playing?? The main thing that I don't think is stressed enough is that the game is in TESTING. Its not like the people who are paying to play are getting the full mechwarrior online experience we all crave just because they paid money, they are getting a test product right now.
4. They are saving the good stuff for the rest of us!! Later though..... The main thing right now is general bug fixing. They don't need everyone playing an unfinished product. It still needs some more polishing. No mechwarrior game was created overnight. Let alone massive multiplayer games like this. Takes years. If its anything like other MMO's out there it will likely get updated on (hopefully) a quarter year basis to fix bugs or level the playing field for any type of overpowering on a certain weapon/mech/strategy. Main thing is right now the game is out for testing, not to go around and do what you normally do for fun in games like this. Exploiting glitches (so they can get fixed of course) and testing the overall mechanics of the game is why its out right now.
5. And finally, (again this is all opinion/speculation, love or hate this post all you want) the developers want you to have fun. The first time you get into the cockpit of a mech you will likely: Either have chills running down your spine, have your eyes glued to the screen, have the sound cranked way up for special effect, or even all three! The longer we wait the better that moment will be!! (The game will be more complete) It would be grand if we could all go in right now and have a great time. But for now I bet the game has a few frustrating mechanics that could possibly ruin the game experience and drive some players away. Best to save the game until it is truely ready to be enjoyed.
While some of us are more than willing to overlook the downsides to the game in order to get strapped in and get to blasting each others mechs apart, its still a test product. When MWO is good and ready to have an open beta over the current closed beta approach I'm sure those of us in the PENDING status will be the first to know! Until then I am content to wait a few weeks, or a few months. The longer we wait the more complete the product will become and the more enjoyable the game will be.

When you say "just", how recently? It usually takes a while, perhaps a couple of hours. If you're not getting confirmation from your payment method, the problem likely lies there not with PGI. I got an email from the payment processor and then an email from PGI and then another couple of emails with info, I think.
