"All is Fair in love and war."
Blast the legs away, cripple them!
My only speculation of the origin comes from Medieval Tournaments, where-in a strike below the waist is considered 'dirty'.
But we aren't fighting in a medieval tournament are we?
FULLY expect me to exploit any and all weaknesses probable, I fight to win.
Why is 'legging' so looked down upon?

Personally, I take all the armor out of my center torso and cockpit so I can fit more autocannon ammo. Coring is also a cheap tactic- If you haven't fully disarmed an enemy mech, you really have no skills and should never play on the internet again.

The slower they twist & turn, the easier it is to shoot them in the back

Ever build a mech out of Legos? The legs usually blow apart pretty easily. Jus sayin. ; )

Sure, but the whole Mech don't ASPLODE the moment the leg blew apart...
the problem originated from the time where in MW games the ENTIRE mech either rendered useless (leg blew off, and the whole torso topple with no way of getting up), or the mech just plain vaporized when any one of the leg is destroyed.
technically if the leg is blown off clean the whole thing should topple indeed (but physics aside), it made for a very unbalanced gameplay overall.
The problem gets confounded by the multiplayer of the old, where latency was poor... and we can hardly get a game smooth enough over the tone modem to use long range direct fire weapon reliably. Everyone was small laser boating and one shotting the leg since it was incredibly effective despite massive latency.
