But yeah, like you described iny our penultimate post, a beta these days is often not any more what it used to be. A few companies have gone the way to use the beta as an extra PR vessel before launch. One could argue with some justification, that, what used to be a beta test is nowadays the alpha test.

And feel free to call me an elitist *****, I don't believe a free-for-all playtesting in advance of game launch does much good for the game except - perhaps - in the PR sector. It is not like the quality of playtesting improves on the same scale as the number of beta testers. Too many would just try to jump the beta bandwagon to "check it out", never ever bothing to write a single line about their "testing". (And no, I won't claim either PGI should pick me, me, me for the beta testing. I hope they make smart choices on that whole matter, and don't worry about eventual forum whining.)

I agree completely. I'd much rather be in a beta with other people interested in testing than with a bunch of people that just want to play early. Beta testing requires a certain mindset, and a lot of gamers just don't have it.

Hopefully they'll boot people who don't submit bug reports/feedback or don't log in for a certain time to make room for those that do.

good testing is critical for any game to be good. i am not liking the current trend in games of release then worry about whats wrong. patch whenever.

if i can do anything to help MW succeed i want the chance. i will do my best to be constructive and not anything like the forum trolls on WOT. that game is so screwy, but what other options are there for that kinda game. mechwarrior excites me to no end, if i dont make it as a bata tester, i will still be lined up day one. credit card ready to support anyone who keeps MW alive

As if I was not already pumped enough already... Will do whatever it takes to get a Beta key and help test what I am sure is going to be an amazing game.

I want in on the beta.. Ive been playing mechwarrior since the 486 days and I had to pay by the hour for internet service. I hated that the old net game is gone and have been waiting for its replacement for many years.. Waiting to get back into the hot seat.. Open the door.. provide the oppertunity.. and watch me shatter the reality once again.. Ohh how I love all things MECHISH.. Free me to the masses.. Allow me to feast upon their hopes..

I've played Battletech for a long time and all of the Mechwarrior series. The only other game series that comes close to the indepth history and following is the warhammer games.

I agree with many of you, beta need to be composed of player dedicated to making this the game we know it can be.

I'm glad to the see an interest in closed Beta, indeed there can be a marked difference in open and closed systems.
Closed can work well if the testers are properly screened and required to fill logs/reports on a consistant basis.
Failure to log/report on at least a weekly basis should result in dismissal (IMHO)
Open Beta benefit in load testing as well as a larger test base for connectivity and equipment metrics.

I agree except for the whole "I won't claim either PGI should pick me, me, me for the beta testing"

Because we all know we want them to pick us :)

A possible beta anouncment in 60 days, nice teaser but unfortunately quite some time off.

Especially as I doubt that the info will be "Beta starting tomorrow!" :D

I sure hope it's "News in 60 days" as that's about the time bonuses (if any, we get word tomorrow) will be in the bank. Up to then only a few parts for the new desktop will have arrived.

The suspense is killing me.

At this point I'm pretty sure that involves murder. Or maybe some sort of grand melee. I'm envisioning a Joker style pool-cue fight to the death in large scale. Or at least that's what I would do were I the one holding the keys.

The more you suffer, the more it shows you really care.

Only too bad though. Wait, I thought it was the alpha keys that were really hard to get/impossible...? Or better, an online FFA in MW4 Mercs, top 10 or so gets a free beta.

There is always an off chance that they may do Beta like EA did for BF3 which is really a poorly done demo.. but it got *allot* of people trying it out that otherwise would not.

So instead of a beta test, it could be a beta 'try'. which is a slimmed down version that is mostly just to make sure the servers can handle it. You could have the server split even to have testers doing the usual Quality Assurance (QA) and bug hunting (bh)

And no the (bh) was not neccisary but I like uniformity.

Which is why a selected group of highly qualified individuals with a vested interest in the game should be selected for a CLOSED Beta and have to sign a NDA.

And who determines what a "highly qualified individual with a vested interest in the game" is?

I have to agree with Arjuna's post. This game will likely follow the same path as every other game. And that's if we're lucky.

Until we see some in-game images or video (not just pretty artwork) - this game is Starcraft:Ghost
