Don't get me wrong I'm glad to see units already being formed but the devs have said they'll be locking out some of the more famous units.

I see groups forming for the Dragoons, Gray Death, etc, some of you guys are even setting up websites.

What happens if they don't let you use the names of those units? I suppose we could be Wolf's Dragoonz or Da Grey Death Leejun but that's kinda lame.

IIRC they already stated they are name protecting house and merc units. I'd like to think MWO players will have more imagination than taking the lame "add a Z" route.

Yeah, if a unit finds itself with an unusable name, they can just switch to something else. But, if they get a "good" name early, and are allowed to use it, it's a win for them. I can't blame people for taking elite unit names ;)

(ED: I've jumped the gun in the other direction, taking a much less popular unit and throwing a number in front of it that didn't exist before).

I can understand wanting to join your favourite faction or merc unit but not naming yourself after a major pre existing character or slight cariations of canon factions\mercs. The game is set in a very well defined universe with extensive background info and storylines so its a bit ridiculous if we end up with Ke££shoundz and Clan Smoking Jags. Its your chance to start your own unit and make a name or at least a unique history for it.

People making units to play together until they're favourite Clan is available is a great idea but please use a bit of imagination and lateral thinking with the name, it does not have to be a lazy rip off of the actuall clan name. The word clan shouldn't really be seen at all yet.

Edit: Saying that I do like the pony related parody unit name that just appeared above while I was typing. Humour is good, boring unoriginal copy cat names are not.

I think I remember one of the devs saying that earning LPs will allow you to join some of the more elite joins (join probably meaning you unlock their paint scheme and nothing else) - so that is probably where a lot of the name protection initiative is coming from. I do wish the devs would give us the list of name protected units - they must have an idea by now of what they are and can save a lot of people headaches. Like some of you have said - people are spending effort making sigs, building websites, role playing etc. It would be a shame if it were all for naught. It's personally why I've held off joining any units. I'm not opposed to meeting with people and hanging out - but I don't want to immerse myself in a unit's history and be disappointed.

Joined the Northwind Highlanders already.

In their MekTek forum, they already mentioned that if the unit's name was already taken, we would take a new name and act no different than we would have.

Well said. I like to think that the developers had this foresight because they do not wish to surrender control of a famous or popular unit/faction to a few players on the basis of "first come, first serve" alone. These formations should act as a proud banner to rally to for the mechwarriors who have proven themselves worthy on the fields of battle, not "ursurped" by small groups who just happened to be there in time to seize the opportunity.

In my humble opinion, an ideal solution would be to treat the official units like "user groups" open to anyone fulfilling the requirements, possibly even with their own subforums here on this board. Of course, not everybody will get along with anyone else, like in a real military unit, and unlike in a player-controlled guild there will be no way to cut all ties, but nobody forces everyone to actually play together, so this should be a non-issue. It would work just like a faction within a faction.

The groups formed by the players themselves, on the other hand, would be organized on their own websites and homepages, completely under control of their various founders, and bearing a new unit name not used anywhere else in the canon - be them the formations of the Great Houses, a newly invented Clan or a mercenary group. These groups would write their own history, their own legends.

Of course, this is just an idea.

Regarding the Wolf's Dragoons. This is how everyone is planning to work within the boundaries of the game. http://mwomercs.com/...-and-sub-units/

I agree with Listless Nomad, I need alot more info before I join or start my own Merc unit. I am new to the site, but not the BT Universe. I don't even know how the Dev's are gonna dole out mech's when all this starts?! Will all new players get Lights, and only the lucky Beta's get the heavy\ Assault mechs? Or will it be an Atlas world, with Assault mechs handed out like candy at Halloween? I need more info before deciding to join or make my own unit!

famous units should be npc corps or gm controlled corps. thats the only way they are going to be truly elite. having to work your way into them.
i think player controlled merc units should all have origional names to keep it fair on everyone.

They shouldn't allow you to take possession of established legendary units in the games lore. I'ts time to put your thinking caps on and get creative and make your own name.

I agree that established units should be dev locked.

Naming is part of the creative fun anyways. Something innocuous, but with a twist would be fun. Like the "Future Planning Committee" from the movie In the Loop. Maybe "Advanced Solutions Mercenary Group" heh

i cant see the reason people want to sign up for one of these established units, IMO half the fun will be making your own homebrew units name feared and respected. thats real Roleplay.

Hey Sug. :) There is something you need to realize. Some, if not most of the units go way back 10 to 15 years. Some disbanded between MW games, but always got back together when the new MW game came out. The two units I was a part of, CHH and CSA go as far back as MW2:mercs. From my understanding house units are NPC run, So anyone in past MW games known as said houses, in various MW games, can still join these houses, keeping their long run unit names and fight with others, under the same name as one house. Same goes for clans when they are released.
