I have been wanting a Mechwarrior MMO for over a decade now and I have had quite a bit of time to think about what the MMO should be capable of. For me, the series really took off when resource management became a key part of the game play. You were constantly traveling, you had to pick up what you could find, scrape together the credits for what you could afford and eventually have to make that decision over what to leave behind. The Mech's were something huge and expensive that it took one man to pilot but an entire team to make sure they kept running. Handling the resources to make sure I had the parts I needed to refit my mechs, the people to pilot them and the staff to keep them in running order was just as important to me as the actual missions you had to accomplish. MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries and MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries are amongst my all time favorite versions of the game. Though just Mechwarrior 2 shall always hold a special place for me as I ran a very popular ladder for the game via the now defunct MPlayer network (Which I can still remember were where I saw the ads for the nVidia 256 that I ended up buying). I also ran the largest of the clans with the help of a couple of other guys. (As a side note that is a bit ironic, I made the ladder in PERL way back when. I then got a job working with quite a few of the key people behind the development of the Activision MechWarrior games and using that PERL knowledge to assist in that process.)

Anywho, enough Nostalgia. My point is that we have all had a lot of time to go over what we love and what we have hated about the MechWarrior games over the years. The game is not even released yet and there is already posts about legging and which versions of the game handled it as best they could and which ones outright failed at it. They have mentioned single mission campaign style play and that the mechwarrior online universe is expected to follow the established story-line pretty well, and in real time (Which I think means we can expect a year at the least to pass before we see Clan style mechs).

There is so much wide open possibility with what they have Not said is coming yet that, as my title suggest, I expect to be disappointed. This really is ok though. They have said that game play is very much based upon the Mechwarrior 2-4's multi-player aspects. While the instant repair bays annoyed me (read my first paragraph as to why :)) overall that was a very fun set of games and if that is all it amounts to being, that will be fine. They are focusing more on information warfare and this is what is really getting me excited. This was not ever a part of a design I have had in the last decade of waiting for an MMO MechWarrior. All my hopes ride on this aspect of the proposed game because it will make team play almost a requirement. I am already dreaming of a set of light mechs decked out with LRMs sitting on a high vantage point but out of sight and a small agile mech (While rarely mentioned, I was a huge fan of the Spider and I am hoping it makes an appearance as it was one of the most agile mechs out there) feeds back the location of targets to launch down upon.

So, to summarize. I think we are all very excited by this game and the potential future it brings. The fact that it is F2P actually disappoints me a bit (as I wanted a true World of Mechwarrior style MMO) but not to the point of liking this game any less. I am looking forward to getting in there and fighting over a planet for control and wonder what will happen when the clans eventually show up. Their response of the appearance being a cameo or something more is just currently a smiley face.

Will this be the game I have wanted/waited for the last 10+ years? Nope.. Does that make this a bad game? Not even slightly... I can't wait!

Well, I'd consider something as well. It may be free to play now, and it most likely will continue, but that doesn't mean it can't expand into more territory. As the game grows, it may find more funding partners and we may just see a single player campaign hit, even if you have to buy the SP campaign (as an example) with MP remaining free.

It can grow, and alter as time goes on. It's a good thing it's at least getting a chance to see the light of day.

If we ever get our mitts on an SDK, a-la Unreal Ed I'd be the first to sign up for an SP campaign mod team.
