Ok, so battles will be company vs company. What if we have a Merc unit consisting of 4 players? Will the lance be lumped in with a pub, or put with other organized lances?

Here's how many other matchmaking systems work -

A group is matched with the priority being with other groups of the same size. So a group of 7 would first be grouped with another group of 7. If that's not possible, the next best combination is found, which would be 7v8.

The system also works on a timer and waits for similarly sized groups to form and queue. If it takes too long, then the next best option is selected, and the process repeats. Priorities are also varying, and often evolve according to the game's dynamic and how groups balance. For example, 8 vs. 4 + 4 might be better than 8 vs 4+1+1+2.
Then, you have the matter of factoring in skill level and weight as a priority, which is a whole new story.
I imagine most units later on will be running in full teams, so groups of 12 will be playing with each other rather than against smaller groups.

Coding an effective match making system is not easy. Even though there are many matchmaking algorithms, each game has its own priorities. Other games have ranking or point systems. MWO has group size, weight, composition, and skill level to consider.

I guess Merc units will have to consist of at least 12 players to get started.

Or maybe not. We'll have to wait and see.

Great answer PewPew, thanks. I'd love some kind of word from PGI on the general direction they're heading, but I understand it's a massive undertaking.

It's just that we have a single lance ready and rearing to go when open beta rolls around (not all of us are founders), but perhaps giving in and joining a larger merc unit as a fixed support lance or something would be better...

The pubbie fights will probably be a different queue than the merc unit fights(community warfare-centric), which will probably have a minimum #

One can only hope.

I still have the belief that for competitive play, as it has historically existed in the various MW games to happen, units must have the ability to dedicate a "room" for unit vs unit games. Having a team of 8 in one unit vs a team of 5 from another unit plus 2 noobs and a griefer that are selected by the match making system isnt going to work.
