A!~KI!~RA! < = still best movie anime ever . .
A certain scientific Railgun < = spin off series but good fun and interesting story.
Lucky Star < = randomness. konata is mai waifu . . seriously, my girlfriend is basically conata and i asked her to marry me . .
Pani Poni Dash < = more random than anything else.
Read or Die OVA < = very interesting concept
Trigun < = science fiction western series with good story!
Black Lagoon < = mostly realistic gritty series.
Pat Labor < = Yes, way up there too, series and movies . .
Ghost in the Shell 1 < = classic
Ghost in the Shell Series < = i hate how every single season ends -.-
Armitage the 3rd < = mostly unknown cyber-punk, pretty good.
Bubblegum Crysis < = one of the oldest and biggest cyber punk series.
Most Dangerous Soldier Geist < = very unknown post apocalypse
Sailor Moon < = don't judge me, it's a very well made series and the movies were very good as well.
Queen Millennia < = one of the big ones out there too.
Lady Oscar < = yes, very much like.
Mila Superstar < = not really my kind of anime . .
Dennou Coil < = a bit random/cyber-punk/detective stuff . .
Saber Rider and the Star Sherrifs < = Yes, it's anime, deal with it!

Yeah, no, i ain't much into the mainstream stuff mostly . .

Robotech and Code Geass. One has stayed with me since childhood and only discovered the other last year. Full Metal Panic is also fun. Also liked Battle Angel Alita. I think they are actually most of the anime I've seen so imagine would like quite a few others.

Was probably too young when I saw Akira and never liked it since.

this plus:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Full Metal Panic!
SoulEater

guess Hellsing deserves to be mentioned as well... :D

btw, I just gotta ask;
what language do you watch it in?

I know a lot of people who watch it in japanese with subtitles which I think is stupid.
I for one prefer english dubs without subtitles even tho my firstlanguage is german, can't help it but german dubs usually sound kinda "clumsy", there are exceptions though

Ah, right, i forgot about Hellsing actually . .
Usually i watch in japanese with english subtitles.
I have less problems reading the english than listening to it x.x
I'm german by nature too . . the only really good german dub was the sailor moon one.
We got the japanese names after all, and the voices were not too annoying either . .

Well, I found the german dub for Black Lagoon and Hellsing to be reather good actually, I really don't like watching the stuff in japanese tho, for one because I want to understand what they're saying (and once you get used to english it's rather easy actually, also play most games in english btw), and on top of that I just can't stand japanese.
May just be me but I think it sounds stupid...

oh, I totally forgot abot Full Metal Alchemist! thanks seth! xD
if I may ask which one did you like better? the original series or brotherhood?

Thread reminds me, i have to watch Macross: Do you Remember Love again some time . .
Also: games: yes, in english. WITH SUBTITLES!
You just lose to much in the japanese>english>german translation.
I'd rather take japanese with english subtitles, sometimes with little translation hints and explanations in them . .
Never tried Black Lagoon in german, and the MTV German Hellsing was . . ugh x.x
Well, on the other hand, i really hate all the dialogue/monologue in Hellsing anyway . . no matter what language.
And how the hell did i forget about Vampire Hunter D and Bloodlust and Spriggan and Jin-Roh anyway? <.<

I actually have never watched any mecha anime or read any mecha manga, if those even exist...?
Anyway, my single favorite is Berserk - both the anime and manga; as I watched the anime first and only then read the manga, I think both are superb, though, of course, the manga...
...It is difficult to compare it to anything else.

Edit, hell, I forgot about Trigun; I've only watched the anime, but it surely ranks higher than the Beserk anime adaptation in my personal list.

*surprised no one has mentioned this*

A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun

(To Aru Majutsu no Index/To aru Kagaku no Railgun)

---By far one of my alltime favorites. Action? Check. Mechas? Check. Romance? Check...Check...Check....Awesomeness? Heck yes.
-The main series is Index, while Railgun is a complete sidestory based on the two differing main perspectives of the story universe. The anime has great music and the entire series is incredibly detailed and well-thought out.

Aside from that:

-Guilty Crown (anime only, came out Nov. 11)
-Cowboy Beebop
-Ghost in the Shell
-Naruto (manga only...didn't get into the new anime)
-Baby Steps (manga)

And a few others probably...read a lot when I was unemployed since I didn't have anything better to do atm. :P

Edit: Forgot Black Lagoon. Ballin'.

IK always wanted to watch this, I had a original game boy game based off it. Was a darn good fighting game for back then and on a old school game boy

It's on Hulu and all I can say is that Kenshiro is literally kung fu action Jesus.

I've watched a lot of anime a few of my favorites are

Hajime no Ippo (boxing anime)
Initial D (mountain/drift/street racing anime)
Dai Guard (realistic "super robot", with office workers saving the world :D )
Macross (I'm a Macross lifer, I've watch ALL of them. yeah that's right, even 7 which I actually liked it for what it was... ok yeah it broke me)
Detroit Metal City (comedy/slice of life about a heavy metal band's lead singer that is hardly the type.)
Beck - Mongolian Chop Squad (local band trying to make it big, watch the english dub the VA's did a great job singing)

As far as mecha, I want more "real robot" series. Problem with more of the newer series is that they try to start off "real" with tactics but end up being lame super robot.

Don't get me wrong I love me some super robot, if you're going super, you better go METAL.

Course gotta know your roots, ie the father of Super Robot, Go Nagai. I'll give you the cliff notes, his works are we where get the the trope of calling out your attacks such as the famous "ROCKET PUNCH!!". He created series like Mazinger Z and Getter Robo. While they were shown on TV they were basicly kids shows with "monster of the week" themes. However, his later works were much more violent. It goes without say his works have influenced generations of manga/anime artists with several remakes of his works.

I'll leave you with some clips

Common theme, rage/will/courage = power. I'm talking about that rage/will is actual tangible energy in these mecha universes

I'll end with one of the newer re works. Mazinkaiser SKL. This design of super robot has always been about having the robot trend the line between if looks like a god or a demon. With this short OVA series, it goes for the later with appropriate pilots :3

I didn't think there'd be a big difference between english subs and dubs, maybe I'm wrong tho, but since I understand it just fine, I prefer not to read! lol

I'd really have liked to watch Trigun again, I was half way thru when they shut down Megavideo :S
not sure if I'm supposed to say that loud...

FMA:Brotherhood is pretty much just an alternate story, kinda feels like an alternative universe, many of the same people, some stuff happening in the "old" places but completely different story, will have to get used to it and ignore everything you've known, but it's actually quite good.

Funny that you mention it Square, I just watched Dai Guard recently, it's awesome not sure how I could have forgotten about it...

Would prefer not to read too (trying to learn Japanese on my own) but aside from the occasional anime I always find the english voice acting to be so DULL compared to the original Japanese. The only exception to date would have to be Black Lagoon; that one I far prefer the english voice actors.

You think english voice acting is dull?
Try german! lol

aside of very stupid translations at times it becomes clear they didn't put too much thought into it to begin with.
However, Black Lagoon seems to be an exception again...
Guess we can all agree that this anime is just awesome!

subs/dubs are about preference and VA ability. example, the Dai Guard english dub is just superior to the japanese ones. They're a little stiff at first but they really get into it and lets face it office work based jokes do not translate well if you have to read them.

Beck is another, here's the thing the Japanese main character is supposed to sing in fantastic english and his girlfriend grew up in the states, but OMG the engrish is cringe worthy. The English VA's do a great job at capturing the emotion and singing really well.

At the same time bad english VAs can make a show feel really horrible just because they don't deliver the right emotion.
