The Urbie is basically the same idea as the Hollander applied to urban combat. A purpose built mech pretty much built around a single high-damage ballistics weapon.

I guess it has its place on the battlefield as a mech designed specifically for urban combat but, It looks like a trashcan with legs. The R2-D2 of mechs, the ugly duckling of the mechworld, the out of shape mech that just wants to find true love. In every forum there is at least one person dropping an Urbie bomb.

It just looks accident prone to me, like the mech you would use for the annual mech carnival's side show. Somebody explain their fascination with this mech and what makes the UrbanMech a prized and sought after possession.

its an ultra ac 10 or ac 20 with jump jets and a small profile. your assault lance marches down the street, the urban mechs pop out behind you, guess who wins? and for the cost of 1 of your mechs with change left over, you lose 400 tons of mechs to our urbies!

The problem with the UrbanMech is that it's advantages don't translate too well from BattleTech to MechWarrior. Namely it's low price in both c-bills and BV, combined with it's excellent range compared to most other light 'mechs.

It can be useful however. Let's say for example you're forced to drop 3 of each weight class into a battle, a team that picks three UrbanMechs will have an edge over the team that went with two Commandos and a Jenner in a straight up fight. Or if your team has a c-bill limit. Or something else, I'm not sure how the team plans to have not everyone drop Atlases, but whatever they have in order might make the UrbanMech useful.

While there's a bunch of other light 'mechs I'd rather see than the Urbie (Wolfhound, Firestarter, Panther, Javelin...) I don't think it would be a waste of time and effort to put it in the game, and I think it could see viable use depending upon how things work out -- provided a 'mech's (low) price is an advantage somehow.

Wait till somewhat switches the AC-20 urbie for a Gauss rifle.
The hilarity :D

that cuts your firepower by 75% for doubling your range (guass hits do less dmg then ac 20 per round, and fire alot slower)

and in the open, the urbie moves too slow, its only good in tight quarters.

...because in a tight map, no one really expects a plasma on a clan urbie.

Part of it is perversity.

In a culture where everybody moans about how they want mech x in the game in defiance of canon, or how mech y is overpowered; the "give me a break" response is "I like the Urbie!". The Urbie fan rejects aesthetics, optimisation, anything people love to have an argument over; in exchange for the Urbie's "little engine that could" heart. As the cartoon indicates, it's the underdog design that wins through once in a while.

For me, there's a whole lot of verisimiltude to it as well. Here's a mech built for a role. It does that role pretty well and it does it for a fraction of the price of something more flashy. It's the sort of thing military procurers buy because it does the job it's meant to. If I were to use a modern example, it's the F-104 Starfighter (or F-5 Tiger) of the battlemech world. It's a long way from the cutting edge but it does the job - that's why so many armed forces used them for so long.

@C0VVB3LL

It looks awesome =)
Might wanna forward this to the devs and see if they like the idea of an overhauled design.

I just love the little guy. It's like my pet Pug. Others think he's ugly with his stout little face and tiny legs but i think he's just adorable.

I very much plan on fielding an urbie. Cant wait!

Side note: have they been confirmed for MWO? I saw a list of mechs confirmed but i cant remember seeing the urbie.

They'd better do it soon. Otherwise the devs are gonna start finding urbies made out of trash cans in and outside of their homes... offices... cars... everywhere they look they will see an urbie staring at them creepily... :D

Lets face it that mech is build to fight with the enemy not run from them like most of its weight class , it has good firepower , not bad armor and when comes to fight in urban areas where the speed is not a factor but manuvarability that mech is beast :) .

Before the Clan Invasion Mechs were handed down from generation to generation. Pilots who lost their Mechs became Disposssessed. The Inner Sphere do have factories that are producing Mechs. These belonged to the Great Houses. If you lost your Mech you may get lucky and have it replaced if you proved yourself worthy. Or, you may get lucky and be assined to a Mech that the House owns.

I do not feel many Urban Mechs were handed down. Most probably belonged to House units assighned to protect vital cities.

(I once saw an Urban Mech painted to look like an apartment building. Talk about a Camo job.)

I would rather compare it to an A-10 Warthog. Its ugly and does the job it built to better than others.

For me, the Urbanmech is the king of it's playground. It's a mech solely designed for city defense and urban combat, cheap as hell in operating costs and designed to punch a size class above itself.

The Urbanmech has a wide range of very effective and very different variants which just plays upon it's strength. Which is, an Urbanmech never goes into a fight 1 on 1. They use swarm, ambush and flanking tactics to use the urban landscape to it's fullest effect. And because of this, they proved to be the bane of Clanners when used properly.

It is the underdog when you compare it Mechwarrior to Mechwarrior. But it is designed for a numbers advantage, for a city that would be hit by two or three Clan Stars could have been defended by dozens of Urbanmechs.

I tried making a variant of the Urbie that used a Hv Gauss rifle... Just couldn't get it to work right. Had to up the tonnage 5 tons, and the gun would take the torso of the mech.

A Clan Ultra 20 on one would be pure mean. Go with Endo Steel and get another ton of ammo. Still only 10 rounds so 5 round of double rate of fire... but would make lots of things run for 5 rounds. Like the old King Crab.
