so... there is a possibility that i can scream "PUNCH HIM IN THE SHNAHZ!!!" and my mech will punch the opposing mech in the face. wonderful. this brings up the obvious question, why cant we melee in mwo with mech's that have arms. second, i feel like there where suicide mechs out there that had a reactor that doubled as a fusion bomb when the pilot ejected. might be wrong, ill look in my manuals.... i'm inheriting some amazing things recently :(
oh well.

oh well.

the lack of melee is a programing thing right now but with luck that will change so lets hope for melee combat in the future

AH. K.

That explains it. ATM I can't think of why the limit on the number of JJS on any given battlemech. That sounds like a dumb question i should ask Cray or Nebfer.

You called?

I would not know why you can only put so many jump jets on a battlemech, Though their operating range is limited largely that the system quickly get to hot on longer burns, as it uses largely hot air.

here in mwo and they are talked about on sarna in some articals talk about the class of a jumpjet ie class 1 being on stuff like my highlander where as smaller classes being on smaller mechs like my catapult or the urbanmech

oh and to be clear im not talking about the number of jjs

Im not entirely getting you. However as far as I can figure out (where is this talked on Sarna?), In battletech their are three weight classes for battlemech jump jets, all pertain to weight of the device and weight of the mech.

For mechs 10-55 tons in mass each jumpjet are 500 kilograms in mass, 60 to 85 tons use 1,000kg jumpjets and 90 to 100 tons use 2,000kg jets.

Out side of the weight per unit, the per unit capability's remain the same, I.e. a mech with three jump jets would spend 3 tons if it was 75 tons, or 6 tons if it was 90 tons or 1.5 tons if it was 50 tons, but in all cases the mech would be capable of jumping just 90 meters.

As for MWO, I would suspect that it's just a in game convention denoting this weight class bracket. From what I can find
Class I 90 - 100 tons = 2 tons
Class II 80 & 85 tons = 1 ton
Class III 60 - 75 tons = 1 ton
Class IV 40 - 55 tons = 0.5 ton
Class V 20 - 35 tons = 0.5 tons

As one can see the mass of the jets brakes down as per B-tech rules, but they further split the brackets into their repected weight class's.

As for why you can not simply mount a lighter system on a heavier unit, well technicly speaking puting a 500kg jumpjet system built for say a 40 ton mech on a 90 ton mech, would not work very well, it produces roughly half the power as the much heavier system, installing more systems would probly worrent more plumbing and what nought so that in the end it would not be much diffrent than the heavier systems. As for other reasons, it is a bit abstracted in the end...

I mean do you think replacing the two PW F100 engines on a F-15 for an GE F404 (F-18) engine would be a worthy idea (or a equvlent weight of them)?

Thats an option on certain InnerSphere Command mechs; but you can only get it as a sterling silver gold-coated model with diamond and emerald encrusted controls, which instantly doubles the price of your 'Mech. :D

Plz correct: Clan double heatsinks are 2/3 (not 1/3) the size of IS double heatsinks. Thx.

Even as a returning vet with a long history with BT, this is a good read. Like a cliffnotes version of Sarna. Cheers.
