For those of us that *do* have our heart set on a Panther, here's about as close as you can get today:
COM-1D Ghetto Panther PNT-9R
COM-1D Ghetto Panther PNT-10K

I have had great fun and quite some success running a variant of the 10K there:
COM-1D Ghetto Panther PNT-10K modified
A bit more speed with an XL engine, and a bit more heat efficient with DHS, but not as close to the lore as the other two.

I decided to try Panther weapons on a 35-ton mech that makes a small-ish target, and I'm using the engine that came with my RVN-3L.

This is your fault:

So then there is a general set of chassis to choose from, what about preferred weaponry and upgrades?

Generally whatever the mechs came with stock. Despite the abundance of customization in the mechwarrior games, in Lore/Fluff customization of a mech was a rare occurrence, doubly so in House Units.

customization in canon tended to be minor. like swapping a Ceres Jaguar LRM5 for a Holly LRM5 (Ceres Jaguar and Holly being two different manufacturers from opposite sides of the IS) or dropping an SRM4 and ammo for a pair of medium Lasers and a heat sink. minor stuff that doesn't really change the specs of the mech all that much. (generally, anything that doesn't change mass, the location, and crit count of the items removed vs the items added can be done fairly simply and quickly.)

a lot of customization had little to do with the performance of the mech. (like custom paint jobs. or fitting sheet metal plating to alter the appearance slightly. or fitting a sound system into the cockpit, or a custom drink cooler, etc.)

The hero Spider gives us a new humanoid chassis with the right hardpoints to make a Panther:

One thing, just for all you people who took time to look all this stuff up.
you guys are awesome

Next you Rasalhague guys are awesome (I am of direct Scandinavian descent, my Great Great Grandfather Peter came from Denmark to the USA in 1903). May Thor and Odin watch and protect you. Keep yourselves sharp and fight well. We have some Clanners to take out.

Broke down and bought the resistance pack...
If we could donate mechs, you would be the proud owner of one of those Made In The FRR-Panthers.

Go Panthers!
