I've been playing Mechwarrior games ever since my parents got a free Mechwarrior 2 CD with their first IBM computer. I love everything about the Mech universe.
But I've never read any of the fiction or learned very much of what's going on with the storyline. Would love to correct this and am looking for a little feedback on where would be a good point to start at in the series (which looks like it'll keep me busy for awhile).
The story

Agreed.
Also, the Warrior Trilogy would be good. Its prior to the Clan Invasion but will get you up to speed on the general feel for a lot of the Inner Sphere major players and politics. Who hates who and why.

Most annoying thing is finding these actually in stock. I can't wait for more of it to transition to ebooks so it never goes OOP.

Remember to check the start date in those books. Most are after we start game-play but will give you a solid idea of what is going to happen, and how gameplay will be used. Those books and tros will give you a good idea when a new mech or weapons system may be added to the game.

The battletech wiki is not a bad place to start for a good over view of what has happend up untill the darkages. they have time lines and history of the Inner Sphere and Clans. Correct me if i am wrong but i think this game takes place is just before the clan invade and just after the 4th succession war in the timeline.
