In the good old SW era House Liao used mainlly mechs with AC 20s. Steiner rekits used mostly SRMs for the price of longe range capabilitys:
Archer,Thunderbolt...

Gauss Rifles.
Sure, the almighty Gauss doesn't really pick up with the faction until the Heavy Gauss starts being churned out (At which point, it's no-holds-barred "Every gauss to a mech" philosophy). We won't likely see the Gauss overdoses for a few years yet.
Prior to the Gauss Rifle, the main idea for the Lyrans was about big 'mechs. The gimmick with the Lyrans was the opposite of the Combine. Lyrans are all about having the money to throw at the problem, but because of social generals, their armies were horribly trained for anything but defensive operations. On the flip side, the Dracs were all about being ridiculously skilled, but had only light 'mechs and heavy 'mechs that think they're light to back it up.
So in this era, the most likely way to make a true Lyran force would be to go with the old "Wall of steel" approach. That is to say, big 'mechs, big guns, and as little engine as possible. Anything that moves more than 65kph is considered a scout. This makes for a very big and durable force, but will leave you open to getting outmaneuvered, so preparing for that sort of thing would be wise.

Single combat?
Had the atlas his rear lasers?
A Atlas how knows his place would never fight out a Duell vs a smaller and more mobile mech - he would close to its objective and leave the flea to his lance mates.

If you've seen the game footage, you should know that there are no rear-firing weapons in MW-O. All 4 lasers on the Atlas in the demo fire forwards. I'm not on the dev playtest team, so I haven't seen Jenners killing Atlases first-hand, I've only read their posts about it afterwards. Ask them how they do it. And get some footage,'cos I'd love to see that.

The LOS system (rather than "detect anything through anything" radar) makes it simple enough, given the right environment.
*An Atlas plods through a city; narrow roads abound. Suddenly, the giant 'Mech rocks forward, molten armor splattering the nearby buildings as missiles and lasers slam into its back. Deactivating the fire control systems' safeties, the Atlas's pilot turns their 'Mech to see a set of fading jump jet exhaust trails where the attacker had been - and promptly gets blasted forward again as another salvo tears at its rear. Calling for backup, the pilot turns to meet this new attacker; again, however, the targeting display shows only jet trails where the enemy had stood. Turning the Atlas's back to a building, the pilot starts to back up - only to take more damage to their rear, as they find that a third enemy has jetted onto the prospective bit of cover. Knowing the consequences, but unable to ignore this threat, the pilot begins to turn their 'Mech...
By the time the Atlas's lancemates manage to find their way through the labyrinthine city, the assault 'Mech's torso is cored and the fusion reactor has gone critical. The pilot is still in the cockpit - dead, either from the reactor's heat or its radiation. Perhaps both. The attackers are gone, leaving only the destroyed 'Mech to prove they ever existed.
Upon inspecting the 100-ton pile of scrap metal, it is discovered that not a single round of the Atlas's ammunition had been expended, and its battle computer's recordings reveal that the pilot had never attained a targeting lock on any of the attacking 'Mechs*
