an idea for some interesting maps; what if there was a huge storm in the middle of a battle? could happen on any map? think of an atlas in a tornado !, may change the out come of any battle?

(could you imagine the DEVs playing "God")

got this idea from

I'm particularly looking forward to ice patches and making skill checks to stay up. even an unexpected ice storm 'causeing a similiar issue with black ice.

Please, for the love of all that is sane, don't give them ideas like that!!!

Even without a huge storm I could see a base losing track of one or two dropships, dropships placing mechs a few klicks from where planned, and sketchy data on the base since and terain. Some planets are just going to be harder to deal with.

I like the idea of weather on various maps- either fixed weather (a map that is always raining, a desert that is always having a dust storm) or random weather (it might rain at random times or storm or etc).

In real world warfare, the weather plays a massive role in warfare. Bad weather drastically reduces visibility (good mechanic for MW:Os line of sight based spotting), dust storms would likely clog up mech parts, possibly even make ballistic weapons more likely to jam, dust/wind storms could make things tricky for light mechs (depending on the planet, wind speeds in storms can get to the point where they would cause problems for a light mech running around)
Wind could also play a factor in ballistic/missile accuracy, affect electronics, etc.
I would go for the following types of weather-
Heatwave- heat haze effect, bright sun, glare of shiny surfaces, reduced heat sink efficiency
Rain- Rain, reduced visibility, slightly increased heat sink efficiency.
Storm- as aboved, but with high winds affecting ballistic/missile weapons and even worse visibility
Thunderstorm- As above, but with thunder and lightning.
Fog- Drastically reduced visibility, slightly increased heat sink efficiency.
Sand/Dust Storm- Increased chance of gun jamming, high winds, drastically reduced visibility, reduced speed scaling to mech size (in sand the heavier the mech, the more the sand is going to be a problem for it to walk on)
Snow- increased heat sink efficiency, reduced visibility. Cool effect as snow piles up on things- perhaps even making a stationary mech less visible as it gathers snow on it.
Blizzard- Almost no visibility, greatly increased heat sink efficiency.
Ion Storm- Electromagnetic storm, missiles have trouble locking/staying locked on target once fired, radar gives static, IFF glitchy, UAVs/aerospace unreliable.
Solar Flare- No radar, missile locks, IFF. Electronic warfare non functional, no orbital or aerospace support.

I played a few maps in other giant Mecha game series that had sandstorms, blizzards, and the like. It was scary as heck to walk right up to your enemy without even knowing it...

This has been brought to light a couple times. Weather, time of day, environments, etc; namely how they would provide a unique immersive simulation to the pilot.

I like the idea of variable/random weather, and would like to see it implemented. But the kind of wind that would blow over a light mech, or even cause stability issues would not be fought in. There are limits to the risks you have your forces face.

I wouldn't mind seeing meteor shower falling from the sky. Perhaps a super nova from a distant sun at night time. Im hoping the games vegetation would be like 30 meter high forest for mechs to walk into & start a forest fire or bush fire. avalanche would be cool for snowy terrain.

Radom weather would be very cool.

I like the idea of storms or weather events because it will screw with everything. Including your uplink to maybe your base, dropship, jumpship, etc... Any variable that tests and challenges my skills at anything is gold to me. Yes on night missions. Yes on rain. Yes on hail. Yes on windstorms. If they provide impact damage mechanics, then yea you could get hit by a cow and damage some armor plates. You could also maybe get impaled by an I-beam but let's leave that variable out if possible... I think weather conditions should challenge the commander, the movement and the line of sight combat which is going to be core. You should have the option to crouch down in a deep snow drift while snow is falling and become partially covered or completely covered so that you can ambush someone when they come within extreme range. The snow would certainly help mask your heat signature a bit.

I'm also thinking of lava flows on seismically active planets, or flooding on planets that are having "global warming" issues.

I agree with the weather and special maps and must add the fact that a commander can time his attack to occur any time during a day/night cycle or possibly wait for a weather pattern to pass and lessen or hit and strengthen giving the attacking player a much more dynamic ability to decide when the battle happens, yet the defender having the ability to decide where.

Total war games gave the attacker several days to decide when to attack, it was random weather he was choosing till at last he had to attack what ever the weather was, so he had a little bit of a choice.

Weather effects have always been a part of the MechWarrior series since 2 to a degree, and rules exist for them in the boardgame so you could argue the idea of 'mechs fighting in harsh conditions is as old as the game.

I'd really like to see randomized weather. Fog and darkness being the two most common environment effects, but I'd love to see heavy rains, hail, sand storms and alien effects like meteor showers or areas flooded with gas effects (such as moons). Living Legends did some neat stuff with time of day things, too, like a freezing asteroid at night that when exposed to day light, has the ice melt into pools of water and massive heat surges.

The more random weather effects the better I say.

I think weather will have to go the same direction as smoke and other game elements that could cause problems for slower connections and slower computers. Each side will have to come to some agreement that they can allow in a particular match. Many features will have to be worked in over time and see where problems (like lag) pop up.

I absolutely love the idea of weather playing a very central role in mech battles!

This forum alone had half a dozen or more past threads with regards to weather already. Pretty sure the devs got the message by now, if they wanted to... ;)

I hope for the love of god mwo takes this idea and runs with it. But please dont have it me a 30 sec thing. Make the weather realistic. Make it single the whole match if you have to just make it seem like its really raining. Becouse I would love to be in a mech fight thats in the midle of a huge rain storm. Yes im one of those people.
