Whats the thoughts on "Defenders getting to prepare their location WHEN defending a planet"? Do the Attackers have to drop into a planned defense... or do we think its going to be blind drops on both sides?

Sense says, defenders would be able to prepare, and attackers would have to cope.

I don't know if that's practical though.

I looked, couldn't find a post related.

No unit is dumb enough to drop into a prepared position. Drops are extremely random and can scatter a company sized unit over tens of kilometers or more depending on how high the dropship was and how fast it was moving. Typically you drop, regroup, and move to the objective. Oh and lets not forget, a drop has very high probability of causing damage to the mechs involved. Most of them arent meant to fly, lol.

As to prepared position. Given limited forces available on both sides, there has to be something worth going after for a prepared defense to be effective. Set up a defense and will I send my forces to capture a nearby city and avail myself of its resources and man power. Come out of you defenses and mayhap I set up an ambush myself. Oh and as the attacker, I am not leaving you any satellites to watch me with, my dropships took care of that and are now watching you. Clans are a whole new can of worms as they will actually come looking for a fight despite your having set up defenses, IS commanders tend to be a bit more practical and level headed about it.

I would hope this is one of the game options (to hold or attack a base). Another variant is when there are two bases (capture the flag). Early encounters might be just opposing sides trying to scout a location (possible tech/information cache) and battle to take the field.

It would get interesting if teams could be used where a light scoting party would map things and later an assalt group would have to come in based on the information provided. Another option would be to stage a night raid on a defended site, not to take it but to just harass the defenders.

From some of the ruffled feathers responces elsewhere, planets that are taken/defended would likely have to be segregated from the blank play-planets.

This is a difficult topic. While i would like to see defending teams being able to built up defenses, i dont think at time of launch they will have a full interactive environment for us to mess with. Maybe the defending team already has a decent view of the map. Like they will already see some coverage and paths into cities or open grounds. The attacker wont have all this they will need to build the map by scanning and using their drones to map out what is ahead of them. This will give the defensive team an advantage at start, but it can be countered with scans and drones/picture sats.
