If the mech you want is available for instant unlock. Which one would you pay for day 1?

Hmmm......

Anywho.... I would either opt for a Warhammer as that is a personal favorite, or a Spider just to learn the ropes and keep the costs down.

Catapult, strong fire support and frankly, I'll leave the up front dangerous work to my buddies. Until I get a strong handle on the controls, fighting on the front or slipping about seems like too big a risk for too little payoff! Once I get the controls down and learn the maps a bit, that's when the decision gets tough, do I try my hand at recon or give into temptation and go with a front-line combat mech?

All of them.

If they have some package you can buy with cash to get a bunch of mechs, I will be dropping my money on that for sure.

Definitely a Raven.

Might not be the fastest, or the "shootiest" light mech, but the electronics that comes with it, along with a very cool look make this mech an instant winner for me.

Either a Tarantula or a Raven if I decide to go with a Light Mech or a Centurion if I go for a Light Mech. Still, my choice will likely hinge on the state of the Mech Lab.

I really want to build a Scout/Sniper Centurion codenamed Hoplite: 1 Gauss Rifle (Upgrade to Light Gauss when it becomes available) and 1-3 flamers along with standard ECM/ECCM gear.

The Daishi is my favorite mech, but I would probably try to earn it in game. I might pay to cosmetically deck it out though - as long as its permanent.
