has MWO said they'll allow some of the names you guys are picking?? I can't see canon companies like the GDL, ELH, or any of the Clans be allowed as guild names.

Grey Death Legion is canon...as is Eridani Light Horse

I don't see the logic in having an ELH guild or a GDL guild if those organizations are already in the universe, either to be released at start up or when the appropriate timeline events happen.
Love you all, Clanners, but there are clans already (which will be made apparent since the game starts in 3049, along with the Invasion), so I don't think you would be able to name your guilds in this game after specific clans

Then I am sure anyone who wants to start, participate or be in that Clan will work it out.
We have "YET" to find out the mechanics behind this game.

in any MMO, there's gonna be some need for people in charge to limit things. I just want to know from the Devs what they're going to allow and what they're not gonna allow.
if they allow the big names to exist? sure, I might wanna get in on being in one of the "official" companies... if not? I have a couple of names that are near and dear to me within my time playing Battletech... and if I can create them, a win for me.
I've been playing MMO's for about 8 years now. watched them rise and fall. I know what's expected, I just wanna see Piranha's "ground rules".

This.
If Northwind Highlanders isn't permitted, we'll probably do something like 2nd Kearny Highlanders, or Stirling's Fusiliers, whatever (Regiments within NWH). Part of the fun of playing MechWarrior online in games like NetMech DOS/95 and MW3 was taking on the roles of the legendary merc units, Houses and Clans. It's also part of the reason we use callsigns and not character names.

The link above will put this whole conversation to rest. If you see an acronym you don't reconize look it up.

No idea what linking Sarnanet has to do with this conversation at all, I saw no dev information on there. Sarnanet has no more say here than mektech or any other site.

BUT, as stated, the reference material there doesn't relate to the discussion as THERE IS NO CONSENSUS or official announcement on whether 'canon' units will be permitted as player-owned guilds - just because something someone submits here DOES 'exist' in the BattleTech milieu doesn't mean ANYTHING until Piranha takes a position on the issue.
It might be that they're planning on a complete departure from established canon and pulling an 'parallel universe' trick like J.J. Abrams did with Roddenberry's IP (which has me suddenly curious about the possibilities therein)...
...or it might be that they're going to stick slavishly with the canon storyline and simply rule that any player-created Mercenary Corps that matches an existing unit or organization within the storyline cannot be allowed.
Or they might take a route somewhere between those two opposing stances.
But do you know what the KEY point here is? The fact that all three options I mentioned above use the FUTURE TENSE. Piranha hasn't set any rules about this yet, so we can only speculate on what will or won't be allowed, and express our opinions on where WE would like to see this line drawn.
THAT is what Starkiller was talking about.
