If it's got similiar weaponry (little less than an Atlas), and similiar armor( little less than an Atlas), same movement, and the only other difference is that thHighlander has jets...So yeah, they're very similiar.
Neither the Atlas or the Highlander have awesome long range firepower, they're both brawlers, they both get upgraded with Gauss later. Two sides of the same card. Why do you call that "downers with your misinformation"?
Just because you like a particular mech doesn't make it any less similiar to the Atlas. Nor is it misinformation or being a downer by mentioning that those two mechs are similiar.

Cyclops: giant armored robot, two legs, two arms, autocannons, missiles, lasers
Mauler: giant armored robot, two legs, two arms, autocannons, missiles, lasers
...and so are at least half the other designs in BT.

Very keen observation. The Highlander is still mroe similiar to the Atlas than the Mauler however.

Being simliar to something =/= being the same thing. Nowhere did I state that the Atlas and Highlander where dissimiliar, however making broad statements like "the Highlander is just another Atlas" even though it's lighter, has jump jets, differant mission profiles - is just plain wrong and makes you look thick and obtuse.

The Highlander, on the other hand, is a damn interesting mech with a useful role. Definitely worth voting for.

Their only difference in role is the jets on the Highlander, admittedly signifigant, but other than the jumping part, they would be fought using the same tactics. They are both brawlers. I just think the Highlander is a bland addition. I have already said that I do expect it to win as it's popular (I don't know why *shrugs*)

The Highlander available in 3049 (without spending ridiculous amounts of money on LosTech - we aren't going to be starting with LosTech, so don't try to count it) is essentially just a downgraded Atlas - less firepower, less armor, same extremely slow speed. Its only saving grace is its jump jets, and those aren't enough.
The Mauler very tempting. Personally, I would like to see the Cyclops, then the Mauler released one after the other. The assault class needs some ranged specialization, and the Mauler has that in spades. However, I think the Cyclops would be a more interesting and unique choice at the moment, since we already have a fire-support 'Mech in the form of the Catapult.
Now, I realize that choosing the Cyclops is a bit hypocritical (Considering it's even more of a downgraded Atlas than the Highlander, when it comes to weapons and armor). But, there are still two big reasons I chose it. First, while it may not seem like much, its higher-than-average speed gives it an advantage over many assaults (and allows it to keep pace with both mediums we have at the moment). Second, I believe (BELIEVE!!! CONJECTURE!!!) that due to being designed with command in mind, it would provide some big advantages to command-role pilots that choose to use it (I see having a ridiculous amounts of module slots as being a good way to represent this, while compensating for the relatively low armor and firepower)
