Catchy title, eh? :)

Just a few discussion points about what happens when our mechs explode and we are out of a match.

So what should happen when we die?

I do not think one should be able to spectate other mechs, especially those on other teams. With the popularity and inability to regulate 3rd party voice communication, allowing someone to spectate and then relay information back to teammates would give scout mechs an obi wan kanobi complex that would be unreal.
("If you strike me down I shall become more powerful that you can possibly imagine.")
Maybe some sort of battle grid map with friendly mechs show and only enemy mechs when they are detected by friendlies would be okay.

Suggestion: Let us surf the web! Make our screen go black or focus on our destroyed mech (and make us feel shame), but also allow a window to be brought up and surf the web. Similar to valve's community portal, there could be options to chat with contacts/friends, ability to bring up a web browser, check out your stats/performance (both for that round/overall). Even if it is just the ability to browse MWO community forums I think I would prefer that to extreme wait times or the ability to "ghost" for teammates still alive.

I like your suggestion. If anything I think I would not mind to ride shotgun in a team mates cockpit.

Hmm, cockpit view only I could deal with. I just shudder at a ghoster in 3rd person view or something ghosting for an ally

I believe it's a non issue unless they spectating in 3rd person view, which I suggest they don't do. Let them spectate a team mate. What advantage are you going to gain from that? Two people saying "assault at E5" at the same time? So what, that's twice as loud... soo... twice as good? I guess that would help the people who are really far away hear you if you both yell it.

Which is what I said in my post above yours.

You were too quick for me. But I had already starting typing my joke...

EDIT: Though to post something that's actually useful, I've been wondering about this... your mech will most likely be locked into a match once you die. Well, explode, because the pilot always ejects before he would die. I'm curious if we will be able to quit that match and join another one with a different mech we own and still get the xp and c-bill rewards from the first match once it ends. Or, if disconnecting from that match even after being killed exploded will forfeit your rewards.

No respawn match you die, you become team spectator only. :) I hope the Devs go with this.

I think this is somewhat related to the whole "killcam or not" issue that I faintly remember being discussed already. And its potential tactical dis-/advantages. Personally I don't mind much the ability of being able to stay in game and watch... the landscape. By no means should a "dead" player be able to see any enemy Mechs, though. That's a pretty strong advantage right there, just imagine someone kamikaze-scouting in the cheapest Mech avilable in the first minute and then keeping to play "bird's eye" scout for the rest of the match... reeks of an exploit opportunity.

And that is effectively what a 3rd person "spotter" would achieve. Keep in mind the pilot itself has not the option to actively play in 3rd person view, so an extra pair of eyes with additional/superior view options is quite the advantage. Would I want a "backseat co-pilot" who can lurk around corners and over obstacles for me? Hell yeah, I sure as hell would want one! Because if he gets the 3rd person view, he doesn't just see what the pilot does, he sees more! Thus you effectively reward his team for that player dieing early on... not a great idea. -_-

I havent seen the game modes but as much as I love the idea of harsh consequences for failure or being out played, it would be bad for MWO if players were not allowed to spectate (team only) or leave the game. Being forced to sit in your cockpit or restricted to 1 view from your destroyed mech would suck hard. A tactical map would be less annoying and maybe a good option along with your view riding shotgun with a lance mate.

A good call. I'd say spectate from a friendly cockpit, maybe cycle friendlies. Ghosting is an issue, and while some people have enough honour not to, far too many will use it if they can.

Pretty sure the Devs said they were thinking along the lines of First Person view from teammates.

And we never die...

'Lo, there do I see my father. 'Lo, there do I see...
My mother, and my sisters, and my brothers.
'Lo, there do I see...
The line of my people...
Back to the beginning.
'Lo, they do call to me.
They bid me take my place among them.
In the halls of Valhalla...
Where the brave...
May live...
...forever.

Cheers.

What will happen to a pilot when their mech is destroyed, from the angle of information warfare? Will the pilot be booted from the match, allowed to observe as a "spectator" or locked to their destroyed mech (with a voluntary or involuntary ability to exit the match)? –Mezzanine

[PAUL] If it were up to me we’d format your C: drive but Bryan has suggested that we auto eject the pilot into a first person spectator view.
[DAVID] There will be no free roaming spectator mode. Dead players will likely see their destroyed ’Mech for a few seconds and then be able to cycle through the viewpoints of their living allies.
[BRYAN] We’re very aware and concerned about spectator mode giving teams using Teamspeak like communications and advantage. More than likely we only allow spectators to view what the current target view (pilot) can see.

This was in the.. i think IGN Interview recently.

Spectators can only see what their allies see. In other words you will only be viewing what your allied mechs see in the cockpit.

Great ideas, 00dlez, Coffin. Fits just right. One addition I want to make is this: let the died player leave from the game without any penalties. The mech(s) he used during the game would remain unavailable until the round ends but he would be free to join any other game if he happens to have other mechs in his hangar.

"Use the force, Luke! Trust your feelings!" Even in spectator mode Obi Wan stayed on TS and was of a good use to his team. ;)

Old rule from the Leagues. When you spectate (after dying) you get to be like a Child. Not seen. Not Heard :)

What happens when we die?

Chosen by Odin, half of those that die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr. In Valhalla, the dead join the masses of those who have died in combat known as Einherjar, as well as various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, as they prepare to aid Odin during the events of Ragnarök. Before the hall stands the golden tree Glasir, and the hall's ceiling is thatched with golden shields. Various creatures live around Valhalla, such as the stag Eikþyrnir and the goat Heiðrún, both described as standing atop Valhalla and consuming the foliage of the tree Læraðr.

You forgot to mention specifically the Kava-serving Valkyria in hula skirts inside... :P
