Say I have an Awesome or Centurion and at some point the left arm gets blown off. Apparently we can go into battle with a damaged 'mech, so why not just save the C-bills and leave it off?

maybe get some 'bloody stump' camo too

Because now there is a large, gaping, unarmored hole in the side of you mech that enemies can see and shoot the internals of the torso.

I would personally like to be able to, instead of having arms, have long poles or sharp pointy objects stickout out. So I can run through the battlefield rotating to bash enemy mechs.

How complex are the internals gonna be? Are you going to be able to damage enemy gyros for example?

I think you might just be looking for a Hatchetman/Axeman. Or some kinda rotating razorball. With lasers.

Think of this: The stock Atlas only has a single medium laser on each arm, and no melee ability at game launch. It'd save many tons if you just dropped the arms and did something else with the space/weight.

Now, once Melee is added in, it won't be too long until grappling follows... then those Atlas arms will be worth something!

If melee is added in. And I really hope it wouldn't. It will ruin the mood of the game.

So it'll ruin the mood to add a feature that Mechs have always had in the lore ? Your favorite Mech is a Timberwolf, right ?

Being in the lore ≠ being good for the sim game. For example, LAMs are in the lore too but they are not in the game. Besides, melee never felt quite right in BT. Multiton war machines kicking and punching each other with a grace of oversized pre-schoolers takes all remains of the realism and throws it out of the window, making you kiss your willing suspension of disbelief goodbye. So no punching, no kicking and for the love of everything holy, no melee weapons. If you want that things for your mechs, you're better of with japanese mecha. I like those too BTW, but BT mechs have a different style of pseudo-realistic war machines, they don't need "power axes" and "energy swords", not to mention mech-fu.

No, that would be Summoner. What is your point?

Say it with me now! "Damage Transfer!"

Damage that would normally be soaked up by your missing arm is going to go directly into your torso. You can run with a damaged or destroyed arm, but you probably won't live very long like that.

Yeah, because nothing ruins the mood of a game like ignoring 25+ years of back story, history and experience because you can't wrap your head around close quarters battle.

If you think the mood of the game is ruined by melee, then what game are you talking about, because it sure as **** isn't from the Battletech Universe.

His point is that, like most of us, he can smell a donut a mile away. I'd say he called it pretty close, truth be told.

Pardon the ignorance of my first post, but I always assumed the Awesome's small laser was mounted inside its "claw":
