I've never seen an emo kid in a long coat. It would cover up their sweet band sweatshirt and the fashionable skinny jeans.
At least get your subgenre stereotypes correct.
Your post is all about speculation based on an inquiry from one person to another about a COAT. That's a pretty solid base to make some assumptions, I'll admit.
So here's me, pulling a you, based on the pictures you posted.
Generalization: OMG he smokes pot. Oh and he's 30? What a cool guy.
Actuality: I used to smoke pot too. Then I graduated high school and moved the **** on.
Generalization: Check out that facepaint and black metal gear. Upside down cross spray painted on a t shirt? So kvlt.
Actuality: Nice make up. If I knew nothing about the genre, I'd assume you were covering an ICP song. Kind of like making fun of someone for a trench coat. Surely Shagrath and Immortal would never wear such a piece of clothing, not while full studded bracers are still in.

Laying the smack down on a buddy of mine in the SCA (sword going into left side of his head).

Out of armor with the girl (#2 out of 3 kidlets) a couple years ago at the La Brea tarpits.

Helms are pretty good at absorbing impact and reducing the risk of injury, but you know when you've been hit. Love it. Been doing it for over 20 years.

I'm good, I don't get hit in the head. I hit in the head.
Equipment is very sturdy. More so than the medieval equivalent actually, has to survive years of abuse, where a medieval warrior would get an armorer to fix the dent's after every battle. The helm in that picture is 12 gauge steel on the top to the line just above the eyes and 14 gauge steel on the cheek plates and side skirt. Also, we're not completely nuts. The swords are made of wood (though they weigh as much if not more than a medieval sword) of not less than 1.25" thick. So it's not like all that energy is going into a thin line, it's a bit spread out. Leaves neat looking bruises where you don't have armor.
And no, no headaches unless you get hit way too hard. If it's going to happen it's usually by something being wielded with two hands. Possible one handed, but pretty rare. We're a safe extreme sport. We want to keep playing for a long time.

"Glory, have you been hit in the head often?"
"Why, yes, hundreds of times. Why do you ask?"
"That explains it!"
I love Journey-Quest.

Is that near Santa Cruz? Looks like an awesome place to take my daughter.
It's a little beach I go to called Bean Hollow. On the San Mateo Coast, Bean Hollow is 17.5 miles south of Half Moon Bay and three miles south of Pescadero on Highway One. Lots of tidepools, a little sand beach, and almost nobody ever there!
