It's mixed with whiskey, which makes me punch my friends... so there was a petition signed and I'm no longer allowed to have any. Serious. If I have a whiskey night, friendly fire will be plentiful.

Skip the whiskey and drink single malt Scotch, you'll be good to go. ;)

there is a pretty good mail order winery that sells some decent mead- bargetto winery in cali. i've used them a few times over the years for christmas gifts. the mead they sell is called chaucer's mead. got a bottle in the refrigerator right now that i been saving for a special occasion. i'll probably drink it when the open beta starts.
i found them due to my body's lack of tolerance to hops, and mead is the only mildly alchoholic thing i can drink. so if you have any suggestions for mead better than what i have now, i'd be most grateful. :)

I love cider! Also thanks for sharing that song, I'm really liking the Wurzels version.

Edit: Oh my god, they do so many terrible covers and I love them all.

My parents know me too well - they went to Wisconsin and brought back mead just for me. My brothers got other, less interesting alcohols.

I don't know if I just had crappy mead the few times I've bought it but it just tastes like cheap wine fortified with sugar. Not at all like the thicker, richer sort of cross between cider and wine I was expecting.

Mead can taste like a lot of different things depending on the meadery and the additives and flavorants used. I've had some really thin meads, but also ones that just taste like slightly less viscous honey.

There's a meadery in MI that does carbonated variants, including one that tastes almost like root beer but better - we used that in lieu of champagne for New Years this past January.

Yup, Mead brewer and drinker here.

Latest batch should be ready just in time for midsummers eve festivities.
Been stored for a year now.
A bit above 10% alcohol with a slight touch of strawberries and fläder (elderblossoms).

have 2 more batches brewing right now for next year, one straight mead, one melomel.

Biggest problem with brewing is finding enough space to store all the bottles! B)

Great stuff, if made properly.
Although i find most of the stuff that can be bought commercially severely lacking.
(some of the polish ones are great though)

skål!

This almost seems like it should go in the off topic forum, but honestly this caters to FRR members more than anything. Who ACTUALLY drinks mead other than me? And who actually home brews it? AND... who is actually willing to help keep my FRR brothers well stocked in mead?

I drink mead on occasion, but really prefer beer. I brew both, but give most of it away.

I love mead, but none of the shops in my area carry any (a real shame). I know of a store in a town two hours away that carries mead, but obviously that's a serious drive to make just for alcohol.

I have been known to homebrew my own beer. It's a wonderful hobby assuming that you don't end up with exploding beer bottles, but the space constraints of my current apartment have made it impossible for me to brew for a while. There's nothing like making your own RPA, and making sure that it's so hoppy that none of your friends want any (assuming that you're like me and love hoppy beer).

I once tried to brew my own mead, and that...did not end well. I am convinced that there was some sort of contamination because the end result looked, smelled, and tasted a little like urine. It was a real shame, and I haven't had a chance to try it again.

I have found, in my many mead making adventures, that you must heat the honey up to at least 160 degrees for 10 minutes.... even if it says pasteurized... Otherwise you end up with something that smells like sewer water and tastes like jet fuel. Trust me, I know!!

I actually prefer a metheglin/ melomel combination.. I add cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger after the first fermentation. I love it

I brew and consume mead. I prefer a good mead over most other drinks. For some reason, and as near as we can figure its the spring water, my mead comes up 23% by volume. Still tastes good but it sure warms you up...Now that I have moved I am going to have to try a batch and see if it was the water or not.

Mead? Nonsense. Norrlands Guld and messmör are where it's at. And sauna, clinical depression and the occasional knifing; that's what a modern viking is made of.

Umeshu is the superior alcoholic beverage.

And I'm not even Kurita.

I've never seen mead around here (western US). The only time I've ever actually run into it was in Russia. My brother and I found a mead hall, got the two-of-everything sample tray.

It was amazing.

If I ever get into home brewing, mead will probably be my area of focus.

Mead is one of the most simple things to start with, and it thrives on neglect. Perfect for the first time home brewer. ;)
