Hmm....
Seems like every nube( as well as myself and most of us here BTW...) love he Assualt Mechs...
BUUUUT...
I really think lights and Med's are gonna be what we start out with.( and should due to repair / upkeep costs...)
Mechs ar elike folks,, so many versions, becuase they all have a role to fill,
Massed Atlas's and Diashi's would get really boring REALLY quick..Kinda like a mounting knives on turtles and let em duke it out lol!
Besides,, what everyone here might wanna wonder is this,,
Who's gonna whip out the credit card to buy an assault clas mech day 1?....

Who said anything about a credit card? I plan on grinding away at the game untill I get my hands on an Awesome and then start my terror spree on the battlefield. Light 'Mechs? I'll make short work of them all!

No the Daboku is utterly perfect. There is no fault at all. It stands there and shoots a round of AC2 and the Atlas blows to pieces. Then it shoots a large laser at an imp and hits it in the arm. The Imp blows up. An Overlord dropship appears overhead and shoots the Daboku for ten minutes and every shot hits. The Daboku lives. The Daboku fires one AC2 at the Overlord. The shells ricochets off the Overlord's armor. The dropship blows up and lands on the Daboku. The Daboku walks out of the fiery wreck with no damage. The Daboku beats everything except beets.

If you don't understand, go here -> http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Daboku You will learn everything you need to know. Cheers!

only because of clan equipment which is lighter, meaning you can pack more on, and because of engine type. IS omnimechs with all the same upgrades compare, Atlas has the most armor of any mech, and IS mechs are cheaper.

This is still comparing apples to oranges; the most hightech clan assault mech to a half millennium old IS mech.

I find my eyelid twitching whenever I read comments about a specific mech that say stuff like "That version is crap! It has no short range weapons!" or "That mech isn't so great. A team of lesser mechs could take it out, no problem!"
...
Reading comments like these make me feel like it is me that doesn't get it. Maybe I'm the only one who wonders how, after complaining the Atlas doesn't have hard hitting long range weapons, when a version that drops its short range for long, that's not good either, because it doesn't have any short range punch...
It makes a sound in my brain like
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
and so on...

Could I be the only one who is caused physical pain by this madness?
Can't we just appreciate a mech for the roll it fills?
If we must criticize, can't we compare mechs with similar jobs?

Am I completely crazy in expecting effort from the masses? 8D

This is not madness. This is MECHWARRIOR!

Every Mech fills a role but there are some that fill that role better than others. When I taslk about a mech I list what I like and what I dislike about it but I don't call any of them terrible the same way I would never calla pro athlete bad at their sport.

Opinions are like butt-holes, everyone has one, and all of them stink, including mine. Everyone has their own ideals for what is best in a 'Mech, which is why Russ said in the GDC 2012 interview about 'Mech customization in the MechLab that, if you don't use a missile rack, or you're not effective with it, you can swap that out for some armor, a bigger engine, etc. In MY OPINION the HBK-4J Hunchback is the best among the Hunchback's because I love missiles and lasers more than that huge honkin' ammo-gulping autocannon on the 4Gs shoulder; however, the 4J is almost opposite of the role the Hunchback was intended to have, and most people heartily disagree with me.

So, all I can say to you is don't let it bother you because most folks don't like the way you think, because it's true of us all.

Again, I don't see the point here. They're both 100 ton 'Mechs, and one is better then the other.

1. No Mech fits all roles
2. Each Mech has pros/cons
3. Each Mech's potential is brought out by pilot
4. Variants allow Mech to change its role somewhat.
5. All Mechs fall faster to higher than 1:1 odds
6. If chassis/variant doesn't fit your role, choose different Mech.

You just described the exact reason Omni-mechs were invented. :D

welcome to every conversation on the internet. :P

fanboisum is the biggest culprit of "my setup is better then yours" or "my favourite mech is better then yours" cause its mine.

all you can really do is meet them in battle and show that the mech you use is not the defining reason of which mech beats which mech.

It's like saying that an Atom Bomb is better than an M16 because it causes more damage. But the M16 is cheaper and can be used by soldiers.

Ah, well, you see, Atom Bombs *can* be used by soldiers.
Any soldier with a tripod-mounted recoilless rifle, to be precise.
Yeah, the M-28/M-29 Davy Crockett ones.

Also, people seem to forget that most long-range weapons can be used at short-range.

And crotch-guns, don't forget that part of the Mackie.

Please note that the original Mackie had a single Large Laser at the crotch rather than twin Medium Lasers.

Well, given that society's ground beneath them is so unstable, they gotta hang on to something. Best we all go out of our way to give them something to hold on to. They deserve it.

Buddy, you're preaching to a guy that likes the Quickdraw for the amusing ammunition explosions. You're not alone.

Well, everyone wants the perfect 'mech, the "I Win" button, if you will. The sad reality is that this thought is garbage. Hence, the use of a full lance is designed to compensate for the weaknesses o.O

I really don't understand the logic either, OP.

Most of the people who talk like that are forgetting that this (and Battletech in general) are about teamwork, you're not picking a 'mech for the Grand Melee. You have other designs to help cover your Atlas while you get in range to put that monster AC to use, faster designs to tie up/distract the enemy while you close, or you simply backstop LRMs while your teammates get into a better position if the enemy is determined to keep you at bay.

Bolded for emphasis.

Daishi's are fine beasts, but I would probably take 3 and a half mackies for the same cost, myself

60 tons of armor on my side, 3 ppc's, 6 ML's and 3 AC10's vs your daishi's measly 19-ish tons of armor, 4 ER LL's, 4 MPL's, 2 UAC5's, and 1 LRM 10.

Quantity has a quality all its own... Especially in the Battletech universe. They had to rewrite the rules of the game to discourage people from taking enormous swarms of Savannah Masters and simply burying their opponents under the sheer weight of cheap firepower.

I think all the talk that is foolhardy..... Balancing between the variants, customization with the Mechlab, pilot skill, lance tactics, etc... All have a part in making this game great, and differentiating every players' experience. So don't let you eyelids twitch..... just suffer with the rest of us.......

-sigh
*suffers*
