That cockpit is a Gauss magnet.

As long as the rule says one hit destruction of cockpit is possible, I would avoid using Catapult unless I am far away and unloading my LRMs.

I see no reason why a one shot kill cannot happen. As far as unloading all the missiles goes, this comes down to knowing your role, teamwork, and a bit of common sense. :)
There will be times when you will have to close on the enemy. If you have some lasers and some grit you will be fine if you have situational awareness and a good team. Teamwork (in my opinion) will be the deciding factor in this game.

God I hope not. Zoom was one of the biggest problems in previous games...

To me the cockpit of the Catapult doesn't appear to be that large at all. Sure, it could be smaller, but it already is less than 50% of what it used to be in the traditional artwork. I sure won't be afraid of getting head shot because of the size of my windows ;)

First, you'll have to win a LOT of battles in an unmodified Atlas to earn enough XP to unlock the Zoom modules & the Loyalty Points to unlock the Gauss Rifle. Then you'll have to hope that the head hit location is big enough to hit reliably. Then you'll have to hope that your 100-ton high-tech Atlas is in the same battle pool as a low-tech 65-ton Catapult. And while you are standing still lining up the headshot on the Catapult, his gauss/PPC sniper team-mates are doing the same to you & his Jenner sidekick is nomming on your back armour. :P

I don´t get the point of this thread. Of course you stay behind the frontlines with a long range ´mech. So let this thread die...

now that you mention it, its not a bad build for city maps to either have 4 med or 4 small lasers, and as many srms as you can fit on a cata for a brawler. max armor of course and enough heat sinks to keep firein yo srms!

since streaks are the tracking ones our starting srms are just rockets anyway so its a good excuse to have a stealth catapult in passive mode since you dont need to lock dumbfires on targets.

Just for you, El Bandito, I'm going to make a point of closing in and finishing people off with the lasers. 4x MBL is not an insignificant amount of firepower, and the variants just tend to go up from there.

I use to Jump in the air grab a lock on hide behind Building or hill and fire up in the air sending a Barrage of Missiles at the enemy and even Missiles at point blank range if found. ah those were the good old days

Wait, a Catapult will have to be careful when an Atlas with the same head armor and IS points wont? Hopefully sniping wont be allowed and the game will follow more TT as far as targeting goes. I think the Atlas head is a bit taller and more pronounced than a Catapults as well. I see then getting capped all the time if sniping is in game.

Hrm, seeing how the Catapult is a fire-support design, that would make sense... Also, equip a scout with TAG and you've got yourself a indirect fire-support mech. That's the whole point of the design.

The Catapult is a teamwork design, essentually it is supposed to work with conjunction with other "direct fire" support mechs. Examples, Rifleman, Archers, Jagermechs, and it traditionally relys on other mechs to guard it from harm. But if you modify it correctly, it can offer a traditional mechwarrior a real fight.

Other than lore background, imho no mech is really relegated to a specific role with the way the mech lab is. And so what with the cockpit, the usual mech human head cockpit is just as vulnerable.

The redesign isn't very bad on the "GIANT COCKPIT PLEASE PLACE BULLETS HERE" problem that some mechs have.

That said, I will thoroughly enjoy raining missiles down on people's heads AND ripping them apart with medium lasers when they think they're going to get in my face.

Or something like a 4 S/SRM6 Catapult for maximum brawling funsies. Yeah... yeah... Brawling Catapult... Yeah... mmmmmmmmmm
