I think that MWO could be a good E Sports production if done right. Here are some good videos to keep the talk going. MWLL Tournament finals between RDL and WiE (now A.C.E.S. and the guys who do the Battletech podcasts at No Guts No Galaxy)

Great videos. I've watched those a few times.

We'll have to see how things are going once the game launches, and a few months into release.

Verybad has some very good, valid points. Of course we like videos like that, we're the converted. Going to have to see how the uninitiated like them.
Proper presentation is a must.

Cheers.

It would have to be recorded and played after the fact as it would be to open for abuse with programmes such as Teamspeak. Can you imagine having each match scripted with key comments from Duncan Fisher or at least something along the same lines as the Solaris arena on MWLL :)

Staying with the League of Legends comparison, It would be cool to have like a one at a time picking system, kinda like draft mode in League without the banning and ruling out things already been picked. Then after all mechs have been picked players have 2-5 minutes in the Mechlab to do any adjustments based on the opposing team. (Like changing spells and masteries after picks).

People might think i am a freak in saying this, but i would pay the same for downloading an HD version of these kind of videos with expert commentary as i do for a song on iTunes ($1.00). I see the value in seeing the top units battling it out, watching their tactics, listening to the views of the commentators because it would allow me to understand the game better and improve my game play as well. It would be very interesting to see how they deploy their lights, heavies etc. on the different maps and i think that it would lead to better matches.

Not to mention that it would be simply enjoyable to watch.

The other reason i would pay for the videos is that i am time poor with 3 kids and a business. I simply don't have the time to jump on the forums to learn what i need so the best source of information will be my colleagues in ACES and these kind of videos. Just an afterthought !!

it's going to take a lot of effort on our part, as well as the MWO developers and investors. I hope to see it happen. Smoke Jaguar Reborn will be doing its part to promote the game as much as possible and to push for competitive play.

BTW, here's a video from a Virtual World tournament. It's short, but just that it shows that it can happen in some capacity. I don't think that MechWarrior can ever reach the success of Starcraft, because... what can? What I do think is that we can have medium sized live-MechWarrior tournaments, that are watched by the player-base. If we get non-players to watch due to the excitement, so be it. But this is not required to facilitate such a tournament.

DIY tournaments work, just look at the fighting genre. The day the MWO offers private servers, is the day that I start working with our local lan gaming center to set up tournaments.

While I think MWO e-sport would be fun to see, I don't think it's suitable for being a serious e-sport because of the chance elements in the game. MWO has random luck elements when determining criticial hits and through armor criticals. The best e-sports are ones where everything is completely objective and the player has full control. To have that, I think critical hits would need to be get rid of completely.

Id be down for Esports in MWO.. wish it was in MWLL (Mod for crysis warhead so that in its self makes it hard >.<)
There would be a lot of pros to this idea.. the few cons could easily be fixed once the game comes out of beta.. as for right now. too early to say anything about Esports coming into the thought process of the devs just because they have a lot of bigger stuff on their plate right now.

But closer to the game coming out of beta I would love to see some dev input on the idea!

forget about that...
it was hard enough to get WoT to a point where we getting finaly real $ as reward.

even no real community will add MW:O to their games... since its not worth it.

there are a few reasons...

1. not enough players ( WoT had over 8 mio player back then and it was hard as hell )
2. the game itself .. aslong the game is so broken like right now.. and pgi is fixing so slow.. no1 will care about MW:O
3. gameplay + streaming capictiy ( i cant get a stream to run... tried several things.. any1 got it running ? pm me )
4. no worldwide servers
5. balance + future updates who are still in the dark ( clanmechs .. are they $? )

all over.. give this game 1 year maybe then its done and if the playercount going up to 1-2 million.

maybe i have another pov on this since i did play games alrdy for monthly $ and did still play leagues for $ till last year.
my ex clan and me would stay far away from a MW:O e-sport league.

if you want a good hint...

search for a private sponsor... maybe a lil graphiccard or smt... and setup a tourney yourself.

edit : even when pgi spends some $ or MC .. who will organise it ? our community mods ? lmao

only for ppl who have no clue what happening behind the scenes.
chess is sport too .. as an example.

if you training each day 3-5 hrs a day you will get that it isnt fun all the time..( since your not stupid playing random matches... 50% of the time is offgame stuff.. or just repeating 10.000 times the same move )

This game has so much esports potential it makes my eyes bleed. Imagine the international tournaments, halls decorated like the interior of a dropship and all the action on big screens with cheesy but professional live commentary. Territory battles for special loot, ladder matches, Solaris arena, and the urbanmech battle royal! And trophies of course, lots of trophies (figure prints spray painted gold!) All this backed up by live broadcasts on your favorite virtual networks.

The game will have to be far more polished by then though. More of everything, all the pvp brackets, and a much improved floating spectator mode at the very least. But still, if all goes to plan, it will be glorious.

What?.... Chess is not a sport, its a board game. Please do go look up both the definition of sport, and chess. Now, some crazy people do see chess as a Mind sport, which is a Non-physical sport, which is its own classification and a oxymoron. They are just using the word sport in a attempt to get it in the Olympics.

The word E-sport is ironic. It honestly is kinda funny at the same time. I always watch MLG when I want some comedy gold. There really is people out there that take that stuff way too serious.

I can see why sports became popular. Playing them can at least help you in many ways in every day life even in this day and age. Playing video games? Pretty much worthless in application to anything other then playing more video games. Educational video games are a exception to this, as they are not meant mainly as entertainment.
